Chapter 14 - The House That Remembered

Rachel returned to the old house with Vanessa.
The locked bedroom door stood at the end of the hallway.
Margaret had never allowed anyone inside.
Rachel used the brass key.
The door opened.
The room was almost untouched.
Old furniture.
Boxes.
Photographs.
A mirror.
And a large wooden wardrobe.
Rachel opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Vanessa whispered.
"Mom kept everything."
Rachel pulled out the first folder.
Birth records.
Medical records.
Adoption papers.
Photographs.
Letters.
She found Sarah's name.
Then Daniel's.
Then Evelyn's.
The story became clearer.
But not complete.
There had been a custody dispute.
There had been accusations.
There had been money.
And there had been one missing document.
The original birth record.
Rachel searched every box.
Nothing.
Then Vanessa noticed the mirror.
"Look."
A small crack ran across its lower corner.
Rachel touched it.
The mirror shifted.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Rachel opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Daniel.
My daughter,
If you found this, then the people I feared have finally failed to keep you away from the truth.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
He continued.
There are three women who will tell you three different stories.
Margaret will tell you she saved you.
Evelyn will tell you she protected you.
Sarah will tell you she never abandoned you.
All three are telling pieces of the truth.
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa shook her head.
Rachel continued reading.
The person who knows the entire truth is the one person you would never suspect.
The letter ended there.
Rachel stared.
"Who?"
Vanessa whispered.
"I don't know."
Rachel searched the compartment again.
She found a second envelope.
This one was addressed to Lily.
Vanessa immediately took it.
"What?"
Rachel looked at her.
"Why would Dad leave something for Lily?"
Vanessa opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Lily as a baby.
Beside her was Margaret.
And behind them stood a woman.
Rachel recognized her.
Sarah.
Vanessa dropped the photograph.
"No."
Rachel picked it up.
"She knew Lily."
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's impossible."
Rachel looked closer.
There was a date written on the back.
The same day Lily was born.
Rachel's mind raced.
"If Sarah was there when Lily was born..."
Vanessa whispered.
"Then she never disappeared."
Rachel turned.
"She was watching us."
A sound came from downstairs.
Both women froze.
Footsteps.
Someone had entered the house.
Rachel whispered.
"Mom?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
"How do you know?"
"Because Mom doesn't walk like that."
Rachel stared.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a woman's voice came from below.
"Rachel."
Rachel recognized it.
Sarah.
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa whispered.
"Don't answer."
Sarah called again.
"Rachel, you need to hear me."
Rachel moved toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
A door opened downstairs.
Then Sarah said something that made Rachel stop.
"I know who your biological father is."
Rachel turned pale.
Her biological father?
Daniel had never been her biological father?
Rachel stared down the staircase.
"Sarah?"
No answer.
Then a photograph slid across the floor.
Rachel walked down slowly.
She picked it up.
Her entire body went cold.
The man in the photograph was not Daniel.
May you like
It was someone else.
And Rachel knew his face.
