THE RULE OF SURRENDER / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - Hawthorne Street Stands Up

Creed’s agents moved toward the electrical panel.

Beatrice blocked them with her cane.

Then the neighbors stepped into the garage.

Mr. Collins from number 22 stood beside her.

Mrs. Rivera’s sister joined him.

Two veterans from the corner house moved in front of Lily.

One by one, Hawthorne Street entered the room Warren had controlled through fear for years.

Creed’s agents could not remove them without creating a massacre on a live broadcast.

Maya’s backup transmission continued through battery-powered devices hidden throughout the garage.

Elena had placed them after the shooting.

The stream showed the original recording, Marcus’s threats, Warren’s property network, and Colonel Ward’s testimony.

Creed rose slowly.

“You have no idea what you’ve released.”

“Evidence,” Elena said.

“You released the names of active intelligence assets.”

“No names have been released yet.”

Creed looked at the chip on the floor.

It was not the ledger.

It contained only the garage video.

Elena had bluffed.

“Where is the real file?”

“Safe.”

“With whom?”

“Someone you can’t threaten.”

Creed signaled to his agents.

They began withdrawing.

Warren grabbed his arm.

“You can’t leave me.”

Creed looked at him with contempt.

“You were useful while invisible.”

“You approved every operation.”

“Prove it.”

Warren’s confidence collapsed.

He understood the arrangement too late.

Creed had never considered him a partner.

He was evidence waiting to be discarded.

State vehicles arrived at both ends of the street. Maya’s superior, Director Alvarez, stepped through the crowd with a warrant signed by a federal judge outside Creed’s influence.

“General Thomas Creed,” Alvarez announced, “you are being detained on suspicion of conspiracy, obstruction, unlawful surveillance, and accessory to murder.”

Creed smiled.

“By morning, that warrant will disappear.”

“Then we’ll make copies.”

Agents loyal to Creed hesitated.

Some lowered their weapons.

Others stepped away.

Warren ran.

He shoved through the neighbors and reached the driveway.

Ruiz followed.

Warren climbed into Marcus’s black vehicle, started the engine, and accelerated toward the street.

Beatrice’s old truck suddenly reversed from the neighboring driveway and blocked the path.

Warren swerved.

The vehicle struck a mailbox, spun, and crashed against the maple tree.

Ruiz dragged Warren from the driver’s seat.

“You destroyed my family,” Ruiz said.

Warren coughed and laughed.

“Your brother destroyed your family.”

Ruiz nearly struck him.

Elena caught his arm.

“Don’t give him what he wants.”

Ruiz stepped back.

Alvarez’s investigators placed Warren in handcuffs.

Lily approached James cautiously.

“You’re my grandpa?”

James knelt despite the pain in his body.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come to my birthdays?”

His face crumpled.

“I wanted to.”

“Mommy cried when she thought you died.”

“I know.”

“Did you cry?”

“Every day.”

Lily studied him, then held out her damaged teddy bear.

“You need to fix Teddy.”

James accepted it as though she had given him a medal.

“I will.”

Elena watched them.

The reunion was not forgiveness.

It was only the beginning of a truth too large to understand in one night.

Nolan stood near the underground room entrance.

He looked uneasy.

Elena approached.

“What is it?”

“Creed surrendered too easily.”

“He was surrounded.”

“He spent eight years eliminating witnesses. He doesn’t surrender.”

Across the garage, Creed was being led toward a state vehicle.

He turned his head and looked directly at Nolan.

Then he smiled.

Nolan checked the inside of the waterproof case from beneath the ring.

Something had changed.

“The bloodstained patch,” he said.

“What about it?”

“It contained a hidden frequency code.”

“Who has it?”

Nolan searched the garage.

The patch was gone.

Elena looked toward the ambulance carrying Marcus.

Its rear doors had closed.

The ambulance pulled away.

No police escort followed it.

Ruiz checked his radio.

“That ambulance wasn’t dispatched by us.”

Elena ran into the street.

The vehicle disappeared around the corner.

Marcus Vale had escaped.
