Chapter 11 - The General’s Offer

General Creed entered the garage as though he owned it.
His tactical team secured every exit. Local police were ordered outside. State investigators were disarmed. Maya’s phone was confiscated before she could transmit a report.
Creed stopped beside Marcus, who groaned on the floor.
“Provide medical treatment.”
Two agents dragged Marcus toward an ambulance.
Warren appeared relieved.
Elena noticed.
Creed had not come to arrest Warren.
He had come to protect the network.
“Elena,” Creed said, “step away from your father.”
She did not move.
“You knew he was alive.”
“I suspected.”
“You erased my investigation.”
“I contained an unstable situation.”
“My daughter was threatened.”
“And she is alive because I prevented Warren from acting without supervision.”
Warren’s face tightened at the insult.
Creed looked at him.
“You were instructed to recover the ledger quietly.”
“Ward complicated the situation.”
“You involved a child.”
“That was Marcus.”
Creed’s expression remained cold.
“Failure always has relatives.”
James raised Warren’s pistol.
Creed’s agents immediately aimed at him.
“Elena,” James said, “there is a recording hidden in the heavy bag.”
Nolan moved toward it.
An agent blocked him.
Creed held up one hand.
“Let him retrieve it.”
Nolan looked suspicious.
“You already found it.”
“No,” Creed said. “But I know what it contains.”
Nolan unzipped the heavy bag.
Inside the sand and fabric lining was a small camera wrapped in plastic.
He connected it to a monitor.
The image showed the garage eight years earlier.
Colonel Ward stood beneath the American flag, wounded and exhausted. A younger Warren faced him. Nolan’s voice came through a radio on the desk.
Then someone entered from the connecting door.
Gabriel Ruiz.
Daniel Ruiz stepped closer to the screen.
His brother appeared alive, wearing civilian clothes and carrying a pistol.
James said on the recording, “Gabriel, did you bring the extraction team?”
Gabriel raised the weapon.
“I brought a solution.”
He shot James in the chest.
Elena flinched even though her father stood beside her.
On the screen, James fell behind the boxing ring.
Warren shouted at Gabriel.
“What have you done?”
“What General Creed ordered.”
Everyone in the garage looked at Creed.
The general did not react.
The recording continued.
Gabriel searched James’s clothing.
“The ledger isn’t here.”
Warren said, “You said he had it.”
“He moved it.”
Outside the camera’s view, glass shattered.
Nolan entered the garage and fired.
Gabriel fled through the house.
Nolan dragged James toward the hidden room.
The recording ended.
Ruiz lowered his pistol.
“My brother worked for you.”
Creed corrected him.
“Your brother works for me.”
Ruiz’s face became pale.
“He’s alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Some questions are expensive.”
Creed turned to Elena.
“Here is my offer. Give me the final ledger. Your father receives a new identity. Nolan’s charges disappear. Sergeant Ruiz is reunited with his brother. You return to active duty, and Lily receives permanent protection.”
“And Warren?”
“He will answer for the crimes that can be proven without destabilizing national security.”
Warren stared at Creed.
“That wasn’t our agreement.”
Creed ignored him.
Elena asked, “What happens if I refuse?”
Creed looked at Lily.
“You will spend the rest of your life defending your daughter from people whose names you have never heard.”
James whispered, “Don’t give him anything.”
Creed smiled.
“James still believes morality can defeat infrastructure.”
“You murdered civilians,” Elena said.
“I prevented a regional war.”
“You sold an evacuation route.”
“I sacrificed one convoy to preserve an intelligence network that saved thousands.”
“Did the families agree to be sacrificed?”
Creed’s smile faded.
“Leadership requires decisions ordinary people cannot survive making.”
Elena looked around the garage.
Neighbors watched through the windows.
Agents held weapons.
Marcus was being loaded into an ambulance.
Warren stood near the door, calculating his escape.
Creed believed he had controlled every piece.
Elena slowly removed the silver chain from beneath her shirt.
A small data chip hung from it.
Creed’s eyes locked onto the chip.
“The ledger,” Elena said.
James looked shocked.
She had not told him.
Creed extended his hand.
Elena walked forward.
When she was close enough, she dropped the chip.
Creed bent instinctively.
Elena drove her knee into his chest.
At the same moment, the garage speakers activated.
Maya’s voice came through them.
“Transmission complete.”
Every monitor turned on.
The video of Gabriel shooting James began streaming publicly.
Creed shouted for his agents to cut the power.

But the neighborhood had already seen the truth.
And thousands of viewers were joining the transmission.
