Chapter 7 - The Door Under the Ballroom

Theo pulled Adrian and Lily behind the grand piano.
The iron door opened.
Celeste entered with two men.
She wore a black coat over her silver gala dress, but the emerald brooch remained at her throat.
Her eyes moved across the hidden archive.
“So Elena found it after all.”
Adrian stepped from behind the piano.
“And you have been searching for it ever since.”
Celeste stopped.
Her guards raised their hands toward concealed weapons.
Theo aimed his own.
“No one needs to make a stupid decision,” he said.
Celeste looked at the seven hairpins.
“You brought them together.”
“Not all of them,” Lily said.
The third pin had been waiting in the chamber, while six remained inside Lily’s bag. Celeste did not know which one was missing.
Adrian stood between Celeste and Lily.
“Where is Miriam?”
“My father moved her.”
“Where?”
“I do not ask him unnecessary questions.”
“You framed a child tonight.”
“I prevented a scandal.”
“You planted stolen coins in her bag.”
Celeste’s face remained calm.
“People believe evidence. You taught me that.”
The words struck Adrian because they were true.
Eight years earlier, he had accepted files, photographs, and bank records without demanding to see how they were created.
Celeste had learned exactly what kind of lie he would believe.
“Why Elena?” he asked.
“She discovered the foundation was funding private political groups in Varelia. She threatened to release the Crown Ledger.”
“So you destroyed her life.”
“She destroyed her own life by refusing to understand what was necessary.”
“Necessary for what?”
Celeste glanced toward Lily.
“The restoration.”
Lily stepped closer to Adrian.
Celeste continued.
“Varelia has had twelve governments in eighteen years. The country is bankrupt. The old royal estates are being sold. People are asking for stability.”
“They are not asking for Lucien Vane.”
“They are asking for an heir.”
Adrian understood.
“Elena’s daughter.”
“Lily is Queen Amara’s only legally recognized granddaughter.”
“She is eight.”
“Which makes her harmless.”
“To you.”
“To everyone. A child on the throne would become a symbol while experienced people governed.”
“Your father.”
“And me.”
Lily looked at Celeste.
“You want to use me.”
Celeste’s expression softened in a way that seemed almost sincere.
“You would have everything. A palace, tutors, protection, an entire country celebrating your name.”
“I want my mother.”
“That can be arranged.”
Adrian moved forward.
“Where is Elena?”
Celeste looked at the archive shelves.
“Give me the seventh pin.”
“No.”
“Then Elena remains where she is.”
“Alive?”
Celeste paused.
“Yes.”
Lily’s breath caught.
“My mommy is alive?”
“She was alive this morning.”
Adrian felt Lily grip his hand.
“Let us speak to her,” he said.
Celeste removed a phone from her coat.
“Give me the pin first.”
“No.”
“Then there is nothing more to discuss.”
A faint alarm began sounding inside the archive.
Theo checked the iron door.
“Police are entering the tunnel.”
Celeste smiled.
“My father informed them that Adrian was hiding stolen royal property beneath the hotel.”
“You are standing inside the same chamber,” Adrian said.
“I am the foundation president recovering it.”
She held out her hand.
“The pin.”
Lily reached into Miriam’s bag.
Adrian looked down sharply.
She removed a silver hairpin.
“Lily, no.”
She walked toward Celeste.
Celeste lowered herself slightly.
“That is a wise girl.”
Lily held out the pin.
When Celeste reached for it, Lily pressed the hidden clasp.
A sharp mechanical click sounded.
The hairpin released a burst of black ink across Celeste’s hand and dress.
Celeste screamed.
Lily ran back to Adrian.
“My mother put ink in the fake one.”
Theo almost smiled.
Celeste stared at her stained hand.
“You little thief.”
She stepped forward.
Adrian blocked her.
“Use that word again and the entire world will hear how you framed her.”
Celeste wiped the ink with a handkerchief.
“You have no way to leave this chamber.”
Adrian lifted one of the altered financial records.
“I do not need to leave with all the evidence.”
Theo had been photographing every document.
He pressed a button on his phone.
The files began uploading to several independent servers.
Celeste’s guards moved toward him.
Theo aimed his weapon lower, holding them back without firing.
The alarm grew louder.
Adrian found a second exit on the original construction plans attached to the archive wall.
It led through the abandoned underground railway.
He pulled a lever beside the piano.
A panel opened beneath the mosaic.
Adrian guided Lily inside.
Theo followed.
Celeste rushed toward them.
“Adrian, if you leave, my father will move Elena.”
Adrian stopped.
Celeste’s face held satisfaction.
“You will never find her again.”
Lily removed the second real hairpin.
Its tracking light had stopped flashing.
She held it toward Celeste.
“My mother wanted them to track us.”
Celeste’s confidence disappeared.
Adrian understood.
Elena had not placed the transmitter to help Lucien find the hairpins.
She had used it so the hairpins could find her.
A tiny compass had appeared inside the clasp.
It pointed north.
Engraved beneath it were two words.
Winter Garden.
The panel closed as police entered the archive.

Adrian, Lily, and Theo stepped into the dark railway tunnel.
From somewhere ahead, a telephone began ringing.
