Chapter 6 - Seven Hairpins, Seven Secrets

The driver slammed on the brakes.
Theo pulled Lily down behind the front seat while Adrian locked the doors.
Two black vehicles closed in around them.
Men stepped onto the street.
They wore no uniforms, but each carried an earpiece and the golden crown pin Adrian had seen inside Lucien’s coat.
“Royal Guard,” Theo said.
“The Royal Guard was dissolved eighteen years ago.”
“Apparently no one told them.”
One man approached Adrian’s window.
He raised a phone displaying Lucien Vane’s face.
“Good evening, Adrian.”
Adrian lowered the window by less than an inch.
“Where is Miriam?”
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
Lucien moved the camera.
Miriam sat inside a dim room with her hands unbound. She appeared frightened but unharmed.
“Lily,” Miriam called. “Do not give him anything.”
The image disappeared.
Lucien returned.
“The hairpins belong to the Crown.”
“The Crown no longer exists.”
“That is where you are mistaken.”
“What do you want?”
“The seventh pin.”
Lily whispered from behind the seat.
“My mother said not to let him have it.”
Lucien heard her.
“Elena has always been dramatic. She could have returned years ago if she had simply signed the succession declaration.”
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“You know where she is.”
“I know where everyone is.”
“Then you know what I will do if you hurt them.”
Lucien smiled.
“You lost control of your company thirty minutes ago. Your accounts are being reviewed. Your security authority has been suspended. The police are searching for you. What exactly do you believe you can do?”
Adrian looked at Theo.
Theo gave a slight nod.
Adrian kept Lucien speaking.
“Why Lily?”
“Because she carries the bloodline your sister tried to erase.”
The driver quietly moved his hand toward a hidden control beneath the dashboard.
Adrian continued.
“Elena was younger than me. Any claim would pass through me first.”
“You renounced your royal title in writing.”
“I never signed a legal renunciation.”
“Your father signed it for you.”
“My father was dead.”
Lucien’s expression changed for half a second.
Adrian had found the weak point.
“The man in the ballroom,” Adrian said. “Who was he?”
“One of many ghosts your family created.”
The driver pressed the control.
Metal panels dropped across the windows.
The car accelerated backward and struck the vehicle behind them. Theo opened a concealed passage through the center console.
“Service tunnel beneath the street,” he said.
Adrian passed Lily to him.
They climbed down through the floor of the car while the driver continued reversing.
The narrow tunnel was part of an old utility network beneath the royal district.
Theo led them through darkness as footsteps echoed behind them.
Lily clutched Miriam’s leather bag against her chest.
“Why do they need the seventh pin?”
“Your mother wrote that it carried the final name,” Adrian said.
“The name of who?”
“I do not know.”
They reached an iron door.
Adrian inserted the brass key marked B13.
It fit.
The door opened into the sealed chamber beneath the hotel orchestra.
Dust covered music stands and broken instruments. A grand piano stood beneath a white sheet.
On the far wall was a mosaic of the crowned lily.
Lily approached it.
“My mother drew this.”
A narrow line ran through the center of the mosaic.
Adrian pressed the first hairpin into a silver indentation.
Nothing happened.
Lily began humming the lullaby.
The mosaic moved.
Behind it was a hidden archive containing boxes of documents, film reels, and financial ledgers.
Theo closed the iron door behind them.
Adrian lifted the nearest file.
It contained bank transfers from the Royal Heritage Foundation.
Every document carried Elena’s signature.
But beneath each page was a second layer of carbon paper.
Adrian held one toward the light.
A different signature appeared underneath.
Lucien Vane.
“They copied Elena’s signature over his authorization,” Theo said.
Adrian opened another file.
It contained photographs of Elena entering banks, airports, and government buildings.
Each image had been altered.
The dates did not match the clocks visible in the background.
Celeste had not simply accused Elena.
She had built an entire false history around her.
Lily stood beside the old piano.
A small object rested on the keys.
It was the third hairpin.
“Uncle Adrian.”
He crossed the room.
The clasp had already been opened.
Inside was a tiny recording cylinder.
Theo found an antique player in the archive.
The cylinder began turning.
Elena’s voice filled the room.
“Adrian, if you hear this, I have failed to reach you in person. Lucien arranged the transfers, but he does not control the plan. The person behind him has access to the palace, the foundation, the courts, and our family records.”
The recording crackled.
“I discovered that Mother may not have died in the fire. Father knew. That is why he was silenced.”
Adrian moved closer to the player.
“Elena, where are you?”
The recording continued.
“The Crown Ledger contains every name. I divided its key among seven hairpins. Never assemble them inside Ashbourne Palace. The final mechanism will alert the Regent.”
The cylinder slowed.
“One more thing. If Lucien tells you he serves the Crown, ask him which crown he means.”
The recording ended.
A light appeared beneath the seventh hairpin.
The tracking device began flashing rapidly.
Theo’s expression hardened.
“It is transmitting.”
From the other side of the iron door came three slow knocks.
A woman’s voice followed.
“Adrian, open the door.”
Lily recognized it.
“Miriam?”
Adrian moved toward the door, but Lily caught his sleeve.
Miriam’s voice came again.
“Please. They are coming.”
Lily shook her head.
“That is not Miriam.”
“How do you know?”
“Miriam never calls you Adrian.”
The voice outside changed.
May you like
“Open the door, Your Highness.”
Then someone began unlocking it from the other side.
