Chapter 12 - The Gala of False Confessions

They returned to Ashbourne Grand Hotel before dawn.
The ballroom no longer resembled the place where Lily had been humiliated.
Police tape covered the eastern doors. Broken glass had been removed, but scratches remained across the marble floor where the silver hairpins had fallen.
Reporters surrounded every entrance.
Adrian’s board demanded a private meeting.
Government investigators demanded access to the underground archive.
The Royal Heritage Foundation froze all accounts connected to Lucien and Celeste.
Yet one problem remained.
The final mechanism inside the emerald had not opened.
FINAL WITNESS REQUIRED.
Elena stood beneath the chandeliers with Lily beside her.
Miriam had rebraided the little girl’s hair, but Lily refused to wear the silver pins.
“They need to stay together,” she said.
Adrian examined the emerald on a table.
“The final witness may be one of the names inside the Crown Ledger.”
Celeste sat across the room under police supervision.
She had agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection, but the commissioner had not released her.
“The emerald belonged to Queen Amara,” she said. “Perhaps it needs her voice.”
“Lucien said she is in Varelia,” Theo replied.
“Lucien lies whenever breathing,” Elena said.
Lily approached the emerald.
“My mother told me not to trust it.”
Elena knelt beside her.
“I meant that it listens. It records the people around it.”
“Did Grandmother make it?”
“Yes.”
“Then maybe she already put her voice inside.”
Adrian picked up the seventh hairpin.
“The final pin carries the final name.”
He inserted it into a narrow opening behind the emerald clasp.
Nothing happened.
Lily hummed the four notes of the lullaby.
The stone brightened.
A woman’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.
“If you are hearing this, then all seven keys have returned to my children.”
Adrian and Elena stared at the emerald.
Queen Amara continued.
“The Crown Ledger was created because I discovered a private council had been operating through the palace for generations. They called their leader the Regent, regardless of whether the position was held by a man or a woman.”
A pattern of light appeared across the marble floor.
Names, dates, and account numbers formed around the table.
Theo began recording everything.
“The council financed wars, removed elected governments, and redirected charitable funds. When I attempted to expose them, they arranged the palace fire.”
Elena covered her mouth.
The voice continued.
“Lucien Vane served the council, but he did not lead it. Edmund discovered the truth and helped me escape. To protect our children, we allowed the world to believe I had died.”
Adrian whispered, “Father knew.”
“Elena carried the first copy of the evidence. Adrian controlled the companies that could distribute it. Neither child could expose the council alone.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
The council had separated them by turning him against his sister.
Queen Amara’s voice became softer.
“My children, your greatest protection was never blood, wealth, or title. It was trust. That is why they destroyed yours first.”
Lily took Elena’s hand and Adrian’s.
The emerald projected another line.
FINAL WITNESS REQUIRED.
The recording continued.
“The final witness is the person who wore the emerald while knowing an innocent child would be harmed.”
Everyone looked toward Celeste.
She stood slowly.
“No.”
Elena faced her.
“You planted the evidence.”
“I confessed.”
“You must complete the record.”
Celeste looked at the investigators surrounding her.
“My father told me the child would only be removed from the gala.”
“You pulled the hairpins from her braids,” Adrian said.
“I needed to reveal the crest.”
“You called her street trash.”
Celeste looked at Lily.
Shame finally replaced fear.
Lily did not speak.
Celeste walked toward the emerald.
“What do I have to do?”
Elena opened the sixth pin.
A tiny silver needle appeared.
“Place your hand above the stone and tell the truth without blaming your father.”
Celeste hesitated.
Then she placed her palm over the emerald.
“My name is Celeste Vane. I knew Lily Vale was innocent. I planted stolen coins in her guardian’s bag. I humiliated Lily so Adrian would approach her and activate the royal hairpin in front of the emerald.”
The green stone brightened.
“I helped create evidence against Elena Ashbourne eight years ago. I wanted control of the foundation. I wanted the royal council to choose me instead of her. I knew my actions would destroy her reputation, and I did them anyway.”
The emerald opened.
Inside was a transparent cylinder no larger than a finger.
A sequence of microscopic writing covered its surface.
Theo placed it beneath a digital reader.
The Crown Ledger appeared across every screen in the ballroom.
Hundreds of names filled the display.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business leaders.
Military officials.
Members of the Ashbourne board.
At the top was a title.
CURRENT REGENT.
The name beneath it had been erased.
Adrian looked at Elena.
“The seventh pin carries the final name.”
Lily opened the seventh hairpin again.
The miniature message contained a second layer.
She held it toward the light.
A name slowly appeared.
Before anyone could read it, the ballroom screens turned black.
A live broadcast interrupted every device.
Lucien Vane appeared from inside a moving vehicle.
He was no longer in police custody.
“Good morning, Varelia,” he said. “Today, I will introduce your future queen.”
The camera moved.
A girl sat beside him.

She appeared to be twelve years old.
She wore a silver crown and had Queen Amara’s eyes.
