Chapter 9 - The Girl with the Silver Ring

The message instructed them to place the archive inside a district bus at 3:00 p.m.
At 2:40, Mara stood beside the folding table at Willow Creek bus stop with Claudia, Daniel, Isaac, and more than thirty parents.
The official explanation was that the transportation department would address the route cancellation publicly.
Phones recorded everything.
Children remained inside the yellow bus under the supervision of two teachers. Sophie was not among them.
Mara wore a gray sweater to hide the recording device taped beneath her collar.
Claudia arranged trays of hot food on the folding table to make the gathering appear like a parent meeting rather than a hostage exchange. Her hands shook each time she touched the metal containers.
Officer Reyes had contacted the municipal traffic unit, but he did not trust them enough to explain the kidnapping. Two plainclothes officers watched from parked cars.
At 2:53, traffic officer Lena Ortiz arrived with an official tablet containing the account records.
At 2:56, Isaac received a text.
MAKE CLAUDIA CONFESS.
At 2:58, a white van appeared at the end of the road.
The same van Mara had seen on the rainy morning.
It stopped beyond the bus.
The parents began whispering.
Claudia moved toward Mara.
“We need to make this look real.”
“What?”
“The argument.”
Before Mara could respond, Claudia shoved the folding table.
“You canceled the route!” she shouted.
Mara understood.
Someone was watching. Claudia needed to appear loyal to the program long enough to receive the next instruction.
“I didn’t cancel anything,” Mara replied loudly.
“You have blamed me for years because of your husband.”
Parents raised phones.
Claudia picked up the tray.
Her eyes met Mara’s.
There was apology in them.
Then she threw it.
The tray struck Mara’s shoulder. Food splashed over her sweater. The impact nearly knocked her down.
The crowd reacted exactly as Claudia intended.
Chaos.
Accusations.
People moved closer.
Cameras captured every angle.
Mara covered her belly and delivered the line Claudia had whispered to her ten minutes earlier.
“Then show everyone the GPS recording.”
“She fixed it herself!” Claudia shouted.
Officer Ortiz opened the account log.
“The request came from Claudia’s account.”
Isaac stepped forward with the approval file.
“And the administrator approved it as—”
Claudia lunged for the document.
She tore it in half, revealing a smaller paper hidden inside.
A new instruction.
OPEN THE BUS DOORS.
Sophie stepped down before anyone could stop her.
Mara’s heart stopped.
Her daughter held the black phone.
She looked unharmed, but her face was pale.
“Sophie!”
“I’m okay,” she said. “Nia let me go.”
The bus driver was gone.
No one had seen him leave.
Sophie played the recording of Claudia and the unknown man.
The engine roared.
The bus began moving without a driver.
Daniel ran alongside it and pulled the emergency door release, but the mechanism had been disabled.
Twenty-three children screamed inside.
Mara grabbed the side mirror and climbed onto the lower step as the bus accelerated.
Daniel caught her arm.
“You’ll fall.”
“My daughter is inside.”
“Sophie is here.”
“Other parents’ children are inside.”
He climbed after her.
Claudia reached the rear ladder.
Isaac and Officer Ortiz ran toward their vehicles.
The bus entered the intersection against a red light.
Cars swerved.
Mara smashed the door glass with a fire extinguisher attached beside the step. Daniel cleared the broken glass and reached inside to unlock the door.
They entered.
Children crouched between seats.
The steering wheel turned by itself.
A black control box had been attached beneath the dashboard.
“Remote driving system,” Daniel said.
Mara looked through the windshield.
The bus was heading north.
Toward the industrial district.
Toward Stop Zero.
Claudia climbed in through the rear emergency window.
“You’re bleeding,” Mara said.
Claudia’s hands were cut from the glass.
“It doesn’t matter.”
Sophie remained at the bus stop with the parents, but the black phone was still connected to the bus audio system.
Nia’s voice played through the speakers.
“Claudia Mercer, you traded my life for your daughter’s.”
Claudia closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“You signed the authorization.”
“I know.”
“You watched them change my name.”
“I tried to stop it.”
“No. You tried to stop your punishment.”
The bus accelerated.
Daniel opened the control panel.
“Brakes are locked remotely.”
Mara took the microphone.
“Nia, Sophie told me you protected her.”
Silence.
“You could have hurt her, but you didn’t.”
“She is not the target.”
“Then who is?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because your husband promised to return for us.”
Mara gripped the microphone.
“Is Adrian alive?”
The children quieted.
Nia’s answer came slowly.
“He was.”
Mara’s knees weakened.
“What does that mean?”
“He came to Stop Zero two years ago. He said he would release every child.”
“What happened to him?”
“The Director made him choose.”
“Choose what?”
The bus turned onto a narrow industrial road.
Ahead, the burned warehouse appeared through the windshield.
Nia’s voice lowered.
“He could save you, or he could save us.”
Mara pressed the microphone closer.
May you like
“What did he choose?”
The bus crashed through the warehouse gate.
