THE ROUTE THAT NEVER EXISTED / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Glass

Mara could not speak.

For three years, she had dreamed of Adrian returning.

In some dreams, he appeared at the kitchen door as though he had merely been away on business. In others, she found him injured and carried him home. She imagined anger, forgiveness, impossible explanations.

She had never imagined him standing behind the glass as the Director of the organization that hunted their children.

Adrian touched the intercom.

“Mara.”

His voice was unchanged.

She struck the glass.

“You let me bury you.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

“Not after Malcolm discovered the archive.”

“You could have contacted me.”

“They watched you constantly.”

“They are still watching me.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You placed Sophie on Route Fourteen.”

“No.”

Nia stepped closer to Mara.

“He is telling the truth. Malcolm ordered that route.”

Malcolm smiled inside the chamber.

“Adrian has developed selective memory.”

Thomas raised his head.

“Do not listen to either of them.”

Malcolm struck him across the face.

Mara reached for the door.

Nia blocked her.

“It is locked from inside.”

Adrian’s eyes remained fixed on Mara’s stomach.

“They selected the baby sooner than expected.”

“You knew about the baby?”

“No.”

“You knew enough to build a room.”

“I did not authorize that.”

Malcolm laughed.

“The Director without authority.”

Mara looked between them.

“Who is actually in control?”

Adrian answered.

“The client council.”

“Names.”

“They rotate identities. The list on the archive is incomplete.”

“You could release what you have.”

“If I release it, the council activates termination protocols at every facility.”

Mara looked at the children in the rooms.

“They threaten to kill them.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why you stayed?”

“I stayed because someone had to keep them alive.”

“You became their Director.”

“I replaced the previous one.”

Thomas spoke through bloodied lips.

“Tell her how.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

Malcolm moved behind Thomas’s chair.

“The previous Director offered Adrian a simple decision. His family or the selected children. Adrian chose the children.”

Mara felt the words like ice.

Adrian pressed his hand against the glass.

“I knew Thomas could hide you.”

“He abandoned me.”

“To protect you.”

“He let me believe you were dead.”

“I asked him to.”

Mara turned toward Thomas.

He closed his eyes.

Every person she loved had built her life from lies.

“What happened to the previous Director?” she asked.

Adrian did not answer.

Nia did.

“Adrian killed him.”

Silence filled the observation room.

“He took control of the program,” Nia continued. “He promised he would dismantle it from within.”

“Why hasn’t he?”

“Because every year the council expanded it.”

Adrian’s voice came through the speaker.

“I needed the original archive. The client list was the only leverage strong enough to force a shutdown.”

“You knew where it was.”

“I knew the bus held the drive, but Thomas had the key, you had the second code, and Sophie had the third. I designed it so no single person could open it.”

“You could have come to me.”

“And led them to you?”

“They came anyway.”

A warning light flashed above the chamber.

Malcolm checked his watch.

“The council has grown impatient.”

Adrian looked toward him.

“What did you do?”

“I gave them access to the Ellison sequence.”

“You were forbidden.”

“You are no longer Director.”

The lights went red.

Doors locked throughout the underground facility.

Children began shouting in the corridor.

A countdown appeared on the wall.

30:00.

Adrian struck the chamber door.

“Malcolm!”

“The council voted,” Malcolm said. “Every compromised subject will be erased.”

Mara stared at the countdown.

“What does erased mean?”

Nia’s face went pale.

“The facility will flood with anesthetic gas. Then the lower chambers will burn.”

Hundreds of children were trapped.

Adrian entered a code, but the panel rejected it.

“Malcolm changed my access.”

Malcolm removed a security card from his pocket.

“The archive, Mara. Give it to me, and I stop the countdown.”

“You’ll kill us afterward.”

“Possibly.”

Thomas began laughing.

Malcolm turned.

“What is amusing?”

“You still believe the archive is on the drive.”

Mara looked at her father.

“What does he mean?”

Thomas met her eyes through the glass.

“The drive contains evidence, but the true archive was never digital.”

Adrian stopped entering codes.

“Thomas, no.”

“The true archive is a living witness.”

Nia stepped backward.

Mara turned toward her.

The silver ring.

The altered identity.

The child who survived Stop Zero.

Thomas spoke clearly.

“Nia remembers every client.”

Malcolm pulled a gun.

Adrian moved between him and Thomas.

The shot shattered the chamber’s inner glass.

Nia grabbed Mara’s hand.

“We have twenty-nine minutes to get the children out.”

Behind them, Claudia stared at the security monitors.

One screen showed Sophie at the bus stop.

A man stood behind her.

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

May you like

Then he looked directly into the camera.

It was the same man whose body Mara had buried under Adrian’s name.
