THE ROUTE THAT NEVER EXISTED / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Twenty-Fourth Backpack

The fire department had sealed the warehouse, but Daniel knew a service road that ended behind the eastern fence.

Smoke still rose from the collapsed roof.

Mara left Sophie with Mrs. Park after telling her only that she needed to meet a transportation investigator. Sophie resisted until Mara promised to return before dark.

It was a promise Mara intended to keep.

Daniel parked his truck behind a row of abandoned freight containers.

“You should stay here,” he said.

“No.”

“You’re pregnant, and the structure is unstable.”

“You brought me to a burned warehouse where someone stored a backpack with my unborn child’s name on it. I’m not sitting in the truck.”

They crossed a muddy field and entered through a gap in the fence.

The building’s front section had collapsed. Firefighters moved among the debris, but the rear loading area remained unattended.

Daniel led her through a side entrance.

The smell of burned plastic filled the air.

Inside, blackened walls divided the warehouse into narrow corridors. Small rooms lined both sides. Each contained a chair, a desk, and a camera mount.

Mara stopped at the first room.

“What happened here?”

“Interviews,” Daniel said. “Memory exercises. Psychological conditioning.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I found my son’s notes after he vanished.”

They continued deeper into the building.

Room numbers had been painted above the doors.

1.

2.

3.

The numbers continued until 24.

Mara entered the final room.

The fire had barely touched it.

A child-sized chair stood beneath a white light. On the wall, someone had written:

ELLISON INFANT

EXPECTED ARRIVAL: OCTOBER

MATERNAL COMPLIANCE: LOW

SIBLING ATTACHMENT: HIGH

Mara stepped backward.

Daniel photographed the writing.

“Why my baby?”

“I don’t know.”

“They planned this before the baby was born.”

A speaker in the ceiling crackled.

Mara and Daniel froze.

A recorded voice began playing.

“Subject Twenty-Four will complete the Ellison sequence.”

Mara recognized the voice from Sophie’s phone.

The man who had spoken to Claudia.

“The father compromised the program. The mother survived beyond expectation. The older child has demonstrated resistance to memory suppression.”

Mara looked for the source of the recording.

“The infant offers a clean continuation.”

The speaker clicked off.

Daniel pulled a small audio receiver from the wall.

“This was activated remotely.”

“Someone knows we’re here.”

A metal door slammed in the corridor.

Footsteps approached.

Daniel drew a compact baton from his belt.

“Stay behind me.”

A figure appeared through the smoke.

Isaac Bell, the district transportation employee, raised both hands.

“Don’t hit me.”

Daniel lowered the baton slightly.

“What are you doing here?”

“Trying to save what’s left.”

Isaac carried a canvas bag filled with damaged files.

Mara recognized him from school meetings. He was quiet, middle-aged, and usually hidden behind a computer at the transportation office.

“Adrian said you helped alter the logs,” she said.

Isaac looked at the writing on the wall.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because Malcolm told me the detours were part of a federal safety assessment.”

“You believed children needed to be taken to a secret warehouse?”

“At first, the buses came here empty. We were told the system was being tested. By the time I discovered children were aboard, Malcolm had evidence that could put me in prison.”

“What evidence?”

Isaac looked at Daniel.

“Your officer knows.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Mara turned to him.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel did not answer.

Isaac opened the canvas bag and removed a partially burned ledger.

“Every person involved received a designation. Drivers, administrators, doctors, law enforcement, parents.”

“Parents?” Mara asked.

“They recruited parents who needed money or had legal problems. Those parents reported on other families.”

He opened the ledger.

Claudia Mercer’s name appeared beside the designation LIAISON 6.

Daniel’s name appeared beside ENFORCEMENT 2.

Mara stared at him.

“You worked for them.”

“I worked undercover.”

“That isn’t what Adrian believed.”

“Adrian didn’t know everything.”

“Convenient.”

Isaac turned several pages.

“Your husband’s designation was ARCHITECT.”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“He didn’t simply audit the system. He helped build the original selection database.”

“That’s a lie.”

“I have his authorization signature.”

Isaac showed her a page.

The signature looked real.

Mara had seen Adrian sign thousands of forms. The sharp A, the long curve beneath the surname, the slight break between the final two letters.

It was his.

“He didn’t know how it would be used,” Isaac said. “When he discovered the truth, he tried to destroy it.”

A sound came from Room 23.

A soft knock.

Then another.

Daniel opened the door.

Behind a burned cabinet, they found a narrow staircase descending underground.

The knocking continued below.

Isaac went pale.

“The lower level was supposed to be empty.”

Daniel activated his flashlight.

They descended.

At the bottom, a steel corridor led to a locked room.

The knocking stopped.

Daniel examined the electronic panel.

“No power.”

Mara noticed a familiar symbol beside the lock.

North Valley Security.

She removed the tracker from her bag and pressed its magnetic strip against the panel.

The lock turned green.

The door opened.

Inside, a teenage boy sat chained to a pipe.

Daniel rushed forward.

“Evan.”

His missing son raised his head.

He was thin, bruised, and barely conscious.

Daniel knelt beside him.

“Who did this?”

Evan’s lips moved.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What?”

Evan looked past his father at Mara.

“They took the wrong child last Thursday.”

Mara stepped into the room.

“What do you mean?”

“The route was meant to bring Sophie here.”

“It did.”

Evan shook his head weakly.

“No. They weren’t choosing Sophie.”

May you like

His eyes moved to Mara’s stomach.

“They were choosing you.”
