Chapter 9 - The Camera Victor Never Found

Victor locked the door.
Celeste remained beside the frozen lake painting.
“You were told not to come here,” she said.
Victor gave a bitter laugh.
“You do not give instructions anymore.”
“You are proving why.”
“You planted the card. You allowed the footage to play. You destroyed me to protect yourself.”
“I exposed your mistake.”
“The girl was the mistake.”
Elena placed the bracelet inside her closed fist.
Victor raised the gun.
“Give me the film.”
“No.”
“Elena,” Celeste said, “do not make him more afraid than he already is.”
Victor glared at her.
“You think you can speak as though you still control this?”
“I think frightened men become predictable.”
“Then predict this.”
He aimed the gun toward Celeste.
Elena moved slowly to the side, forcing Victor to divide his attention.
“You framed a child because she picked up a memory card,” Elena said. “Then you walked into a house filled with stolen paintings carrying a weapon.”
“No police officer is inside this house.”
“They do not need to be.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Elena looked toward a small red light above the doorway.
A security camera.
“You should have checked the CCTV.”
For one second, Victor’s confidence faltered exactly as it had in the gallery.
Then he smiled.
“That camera belongs to Celeste.”
Celeste looked up.
“No,” she said. “It does not.”
The camera’s red light blinked twice.
Jonah’s voice came through a hidden speaker.
“Victor Hale, place the weapon on the floor.”
Victor spun toward the ceiling.
Elena had discovered the camera during her walk through the entrance hall. Its casing was newer than the others. She had touched Lily’s bracelet to her coat button while passing it, activating the emergency transmitter Jonah had placed inside the charm before she entered.
The police could not search the house without a warrant.
They could respond to a live threat.
Victor grabbed Elena and pulled her in front of him.
The gun remained angled away from her, but his arm tightened around her shoulders.
Celeste did not move.
“You led them here,” Victor said.
Elena kept her voice steady.
“You led yourself here.”
Outside, officers ordered him to surrender.
Victor backed toward a side corridor.
“You are coming with me.”
Elena resisted.
He tightened his hold.
Then Celeste lifted the teacup and threw it against the wall.
The crash startled Victor.
Elena drove her heel backward into his foot and twisted free. The gun discharged into the ceiling as officers broke through the front door.
Jonah reached Victor first.
He struck the weapon from his hand and forced him to the floor. Officers secured his wrists while he shouted that the search was illegal.
Jonah looked at Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He turned toward Celeste.
“You are being detained while we secure the property.”
Celeste replaced her glove.
“I assume you now have the authority you wanted.”
“You invited an armed man into a house containing suspected stolen property.”
“I invited no one.”
Victor laughed from the floor.
“She invited everyone. She only pretends they arrive alone.”
Forensic teams entered after a judge approved an emergency search warrant.
Room by room, the Winter House revealed its secrets.
Paintings reported missing during wars.
Works donated to museums but quietly replaced with copies.
Crates bearing the names of children’s hospitals.
Insurance documents with altered ownership histories.
Inside a locked cabinet, officers found the blue bracelet Victor had claimed Lily stole. It belonged to Celeste and had never been part of the gallery display.
Victor had selected it because he believed no one would question the accusation.
Near dawn, Jonah found a private office beneath the house.
The walls were covered with photographs of donors, politicians, gallery directors, customs officials, and bankers. Red lines connected them to shipments and payments.
Adam’s photograph stood at the center.
Across it, someone had written UNRESOLVED.
Elena entered behind Jonah.
“Celeste kept a file on him.”
Jonah opened the desk drawers.
One contained surveillance photographs of Elena and Lily taken during the past three years.
Another contained copies of Lily’s school schedule.
Elena gripped the edge of the desk.
“This was never only about the audit.”
Jonah found an envelope addressed to Victor.
Inside was a photograph of the mountain road where Adam’s car had crashed.
A handwritten note appeared beneath it.
YOU WERE TOLD TO FRIGHTEN HIM, NOT FOLLOW HIM.
Elena read it twice.
“Victor was there.”
Jonah placed the photograph inside an evidence sleeve.
“This connects him to the road.”
“Not to the crash.”
“It is enough to reopen the investigation.”
A technician entered carrying an evidence box.
“We recovered a recording system from behind the frozen lake painting.”
“Does it contain footage?” Jonah asked.
“Years of it.”
Elena remembered Adam’s warning.
Red light lies.
“Is it from the visible camera?”
“No. There was a second lens inside the painting’s frame.”
The same method used in Vault 6.
The camera Victor had seen was a distraction.
The hidden lens recorded every conversation in the room.
The technician opened the most recent file.
The video showed Victor entering the Winter House before Elena arrived.
Celeste confronted him near the painting.
“You will not touch Elena or the child,” Celeste said.
Victor laughed.
“You used the child to expose me.”
“I used the recording to prevent you from becoming a greater liability.”
“What happens when Elena finds the black ledger?”
“She will not.”
“Adam found it.”
“And Adam is gone.”
Victor moved closer.
“You told me he would stop after the crash.”
Celeste’s expression remained calm.
“I told you to make him afraid.”
“He kept driving.”
“You followed him.”
“I protected the foundation.”
“You protected yourself.”
Victor looked toward the hidden camera without seeing it.
“Then protect me now, or I will tell Elena who gave the order to remove the guardrail.”
Elena felt the blood leave her face.
Jonah stopped the recording.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Victor had not merely followed Adam on the night of the crash.
Someone had prepared the road in advance.
Jonah turned toward the officers.
“Separate Victor and Celeste. No communication between them.”
Elena looked at Adam’s photograph on the wall.
The gallery footage had cleared Lily.
The Winter House recording could destroy Victor.
But the person who ordered the guardrail removed had not yet been named.
The technician searched the remaining videos.
One file had been accessed less than an hour before the police entered.
The user account contained a single word.
May you like
CURATOR.
The file itself was gone.
