Chapter 12 - The Testimony No One Could Purchase
Charles Rowan was arrested at a private airfield before sunrise.
He had purchased a ticket under another name and carried two passports, forty thousand dollars in cash, and a foundation access token identical to the one used to delete the forty-seven seconds from the gallery archive.
The token linked him to Lily’s attack.
He had not ordered Victor to hurt her, but he had erased part of the footage after learning she had found Adam’s memory card. He had also sent the threat to Owen and arranged the false call that drew Naomi away from Elena’s house.
Under questioning, Rowan admitted driving the SUV that struck Adam’s car.
He claimed he had intended only to force Adam to stop.
He denied ordering the guardrail removal.
He refused to identify the Curator.
The evidence against Victor expanded.
Digital experts verified the gallery footage using the original archive signatures. There was no alteration. The recording clearly showed Victor grabbing Lily, causing her fall, planting the bracelet, and falsely accusing her of theft.
The missing forty-seven seconds were recovered from Rowan’s access device.
They showed what happened after Elena reached Lily.
While guests gathered around them, Victor moved toward the security desk and ordered Owen to erase the recording. When Owen refused, Victor called Rowan.
“Remove camera fourteen,” Victor said.
Rowan answered, “Did the girl keep the card?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then search her.”
“Her mother is here.”
“Create a reason.”
Victor looked toward Lily.
Then he announced that she had stolen Celeste’s bracelet.
The recovered footage ended with Victor pulling the bracelet from Lily’s pocket and raising it for the crowd to see.
There was no longer room for doubt.
The district attorney scheduled a public preliminary hearing because of the extraordinary interest in the case. Victor’s attorneys opposed allowing Lily to testify, then argued that the charges depended on a child’s unreliable memory.
Elena refused to let them use Lily’s age both as a weapon and a shield.
The judge allowed Lily’s earlier recorded interview to be presented so she would not need to face Victor directly.
Lily sat in a private room with a child specialist, Elena, and Jonah. She described finding the silver box, seeing Celeste near the sculpture, and being confronted by Victor.
“What did Mr. Hale say?” the specialist asked.
“He asked what I took.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I found a little card.”
“What happened then?”
“He told me to give it to him.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it had my dad’s moon-tree picture.”
“Did Mr. Hale ask again?”
“He said my dad should have destroyed it. Then he grabbed me.”
Lily paused.
Elena squeezed her hand.
“What happened to the bracelet?” the specialist asked.
“I didn’t see it until he put his hand in my pocket.”
“Did you take it from the display?”
“No.”
“Did you take anything that belonged to Mr. Hale?”
“No.”
“Why did you hide the card?”
Lily looked directly at the camera.
“Because he lied before anyone asked me what happened.”
The statement was played in court.
Victor looked down throughout most of it.
Celeste sat behind her attorneys, expressionless.
Naomi testified next. She described seeing Victor follow Lily and hearing Celeste tell him that the child might know Adam’s game.
Owen testified that Victor demanded the footage be deleted. He also admitted creating the remote token months earlier after Rowan claimed it was required for emergency maintenance.
Claire provided renovation plans, shipping records, and board communications. She testified that Celeste repeatedly blocked internal audits and directed staff to replace provenance documents.
Martin Vale attempted to invoke legal privilege.
The judge ordered him to answer questions concerning financial crimes. Faced with the ledger and transfer records, he requested immunity and began naming board members.
By the end of the hearing, Victor’s bail was revoked.
The judge stated that the evidence showed a sustained effort to intimidate a child, manipulate witnesses, and destroy records. Victor was taken into custody while cameras recorded every step.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Elena.
She lifted Lily into her arms before speaking.
“My daughter was never a thief,” she said. “She was a witness whom a powerful man believed no one would defend.”
A reporter called out, “Do you blame the guests who believed Victor?”
Elena looked toward the crowd.
“I blame every adult who saw a frightened child and waited for permission to care.”
Another reporter asked whether she would accept compensation from the gallery.
“The stolen foundation money belongs to the children it was promised to. That is where it should go.”
The statement spread as quickly as the original footage.
Donors began contributing to an independent recovery fund. Hospitals filed claims for the amounts withheld from them. The Aurelia board voted to dissolve the existing foundation and place its remaining assets under court supervision.
For the first time since the gallery incident, Lily smiled when they returned home.
“Does everyone know I didn’t steal it?”
“Yes.”
“Even the people who believed him?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Elena helped her remove her coat.
Lily touched the small bandage on her forehead.
“Will the camera make them believe Dad too?”
Elena looked toward Adam’s photograph on the shelf.
“It already started.”
That evening, Jonah called.
“The dashboard footage identified Rowan,” he said. “But there is a problem.”
“What?”
“Rowan says Adam survived the initial crash.”
Elena gripped the phone.
“The rescue report said he died on impact.”
“Rowan claims someone reached the car before emergency crews.”
