Chapter 7 - Lily’s Drawing Was a Map

Elena reached home before the police search team.
The front door stood open. Naomi’s car was gone, and one of the officers was reviewing footage from a body camera, trying to determine when Lily had left the living room.
Elena ran upstairs.
“Lily!”
The bedrooms were empty.
The bathroom window was closed.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
Jonah followed her into Lily’s room.
“Her coat and shoes are still here,” he said.
“She wouldn’t leave without them.”
Elena checked beneath the bed, inside the closet, and behind the curtains even though Lily was too old to hide during an emergency.
On the desk lay the drawing she had made at the hospital.
The gallery appeared as a long white room. Victor stood near the sculpture. Celeste stood behind the panel. Six circles had been drawn beneath the floor.
Elena had assumed they represented storage vaults.
Now she looked closer.
A line connected the sixth circle to a black rectangle at the edge of the page.
A door.
“Lily said she saw Celeste place the box beneath the statue,” Elena said. “What if she also saw where Celeste came from?”
Jonah picked up the drawing.
“This isn’t only the gallery.”
Elena turned it upside down.
The six circles formed the same pattern as the stones in their backyard path. Adam had designed it when Lily was a toddler. At the time, Elena thought the arrangement was decorative.
The black rectangle aligned with the garden shed.
They ran downstairs.
The shed door was locked.
Elena found the key inside the kitchen drawer and opened it.
Lily sat on the floor wrapped in an old gardening blanket. A flashlight rested beside her.
“Mom?”
Elena dropped to her knees and pulled her close.
“What are you doing here?”
“I heard Aunt Naomi say you were hurt. Then she left. I was scared the flower lady would come.”
“Why did you hide in the shed?”
“Dad told me it was the safe place.”
Elena looked around.
“Dad brought you here?”
“A long time ago. We played a treasure game.”
Jonah searched the walls.
“What kind of treasure?”
Lily pointed toward six circular hooks mounted above a workbench.
“Dad said the sixth moon opens the black door.”
Elena counted from left to right and turned the sixth hook.
A click came from beneath the bench.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside was a small recorder and a folded map.
Elena pressed play.
Adam’s voice filled the shed.
“Lily, if you ever hear this with your mother, it means the game became real.”
Lily stared at the recorder.
Elena sat beside her.
Adam continued.
“Elena, I am sorry. I wanted to keep both of you outside this. Celeste approached me before the audit began. She claimed someone inside her foundation was stealing. She asked me to investigate secretly.”
Jonah listened from the doorway.
“I believed her,” Adam said. “By the time I realized Celeste controlled the entire scheme, I had already shown her how much I knew. Victor handled the intimidation, but he was careless. Celeste was different. She wanted me to build a complete map of the fraud so she could identify every weak point.”
Elena opened the folded paper.
It showed six properties linked by red lines.
The gallery.
Northbridge Freeport.
A shipping warehouse.
A private residence.
A bank archive.
An old train station.
The final location was marked with the moon-tree symbol.
Adam’s recording continued.
“The evidence is divided because no single copy can expose everything. The silver card contains the money. The provenance film contains the paintings. The black ledger contains the names.”
Jonah pointed toward the train station.
“Owen’s car was found there.”
Elena nodded.
Adam’s voice lowered.
“Celeste believes the ledger was destroyed. It was not. I hid it inside the only collection she would never allow Victor to touch.”
The recording stopped.
Lily leaned against Elena.
“What collection?”
Elena examined the map.
The private residence was familiar.
It belonged to Celeste.
The label beside it read THE WINTER HOUSE.
Jonah called for a warrant.
Before he could finish, Elena’s phone rang.
Naomi’s name appeared.
Elena answered.
“Where are you?”
Naomi was crying.
“I’m sorry. Someone called from a blocked number. They said you had collapsed. I drove toward the gallery, but a black car followed me.”
“Are you safe?”
“I’m at a gas station with people around.”
“Stay there. Police are coming.”
“There’s something else. I remembered what happened before Victor followed Lily.”
Elena put the call on speaker.
Naomi continued.
“Celeste spoke to him near the northern corridor. I couldn’t hear everything, but Victor said, ‘The child has his eyes.’ Celeste told him it did not matter.”
Elena looked at Lily.
“What happened next?”
“Victor asked whether Adam had taught her the game. Celeste said, ‘We are about to find out.’”
The call ended when officers reached Naomi.
Jonah remained silent.
Elena folded the map.
“They knew Lily might recognize the symbol.”
“Celeste placed the card where Lily could find it,” Jonah said.
“She used my daughter as bait.”
“To see whether Adam had left instructions.”
Elena looked toward the hidden compartment.
Lily had not opened it until tonight.
Celeste’s plan had worked.
The card led Elena to the music box. The music box led them to Vault 6. The threat drove Lily into the shed, revealing Adam’s final map.
Every step had exposed another piece of evidence.
It had also told Celeste exactly where they were looking.
A motion light activated outside.
Jonah reached for his weapon.
Police surrounded the backyard, but no intruder appeared.
Elena stepped outside.
A white envelope had been pushed beneath the gate.
Inside was a photograph of the Winter House.
One upstairs window was circled.
On the back, someone had written:
