Chapter 8 - Everything Inside the Box

After Emma revealed the lingerie, the banquet transformed from a celebration into a courtroom without walls.
Lucas remained on his knees.
Arthur Hawthorne stared at the black flash drive in Emma’s hand.
“What is on that?” he asked.
Emma handed it to the event technician.
“Security footage, financial records, file access reports, and the original Northstar strategy documents.”
Lucas stood abruptly.
“This is private marital retaliation.”
Rachel stepped from the crowd.
“No, Mr. Caldwell. It is evidence relevant to Hawthorne Global, Northstar Medical Group, and several potential civil and criminal claims.”
Lucas looked toward Vanessa.
She did not move.
The screen behind the stage came to life.
The first image showed the creation date of Emma’s Northstar proposal.
The second showed Hawthorne’s submission.
Paragraphs appeared side by side.
Identical projections.
Identical market research.
Identical custom graphics.
Even a spelling error Emma had corrected in her final version remained in Lucas’s copy because he had stolen an earlier draft.
Dr. Elena Morris from Northstar walked toward the stage.
“We received Hawthorne’s proposal eleven days after Ms. Caldwell’s files were accessed,” she said. “Our legal department has confirmed substantial duplication.”
Arthur turned slowly toward Lucas.
“Did you know this material belonged to your wife?”
Lucas pointed at Emma.
“She gave me access.”
“I did not,” Emma said.
“She is lying.”
The screen changed.
Security footage showed Lucas entering Emma’s office after midnight.
His voice filled the garden.
“Make sure you delete the access logs.”
Guests turned toward him.
On the recording, Vanessa asked what would happen after the banquet.
Lucas’s recorded answer came clearly.
“I file for divorce.”
Patricia Caldwell covered her mouth.
Lucas lunged toward the technician’s table.
Two security officers blocked him.
“This recording is illegal,” he shouted.
Rachel answered calmly.
“It was recorded inside Mrs. Caldwell’s private office after unauthorized entry.”
The footage continued.
“Without Northstar, it will collapse within six months,” Lucas’s recorded voice said.
Emma watched his parents hear the plan to destroy her business.
His father stared at the ground.
His mother began crying.
Lucas looked around desperately.
“This was taken out of context.”
Arthur’s voice was cold.
“What context justifies stealing confidential materials?”
Lucas turned toward Vanessa again.
“Tell them Emma knew.”
Vanessa remained frozen.
“Tell them,” he demanded.
Emma looked at her.
Vanessa had one final choice.
She could continue protecting the man who had planned to discard her, or she could admit what she had done.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Emma did not know.”
Lucas stared at her.
Vanessa’s voice shook, but she continued.
“Lucas accessed the files. I helped him transfer them.”
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
“He told me the work would be restructured before submission,” Vanessa said. “It wasn’t. He also instructed me to classify personal hotel stays as client expenses.”
Lucas stepped toward her.
“You came to me. You wanted the position.”
“Yes,” Vanessa replied. “And you used that.”
“You were part of it.”
“I know.”
Vanessa looked at Arthur.
“I have provided all records to independent counsel.”
Lucas’s expression changed from panic to rage.
“You ungrateful—”
Arthur raised one hand.
“That is enough.”
The authority in his voice silenced Lucas.
Arthur turned to the security officers.
“Escort Mr. Caldwell from the property.”
Lucas laughed bitterly.
“You cannot do this. The board already approved my promotion.”
“The board approved a candidate whose achievements now appear fraudulent.”
Arthur removed an envelope from inside his jacket.
“This announcement is canceled.”
Lucas looked at Emma.
“You planned all of this.”
May you like
Emma closed the silver box.
“No, Lucas. You planned it. I only invited witnesses.”
