Chapter 5 - What the Camera Recorded
Emma wanted to cancel the banquet.
Rachel persuaded her not to.
“Lucas already knows you discovered the theft,” Rachel said. “If you withdraw now, he may destroy evidence or convince Hawthorne you are retaliating because of marital problems.”
“So I continue planning his celebration?”
“You continue watching.”
Emma did more than watch.
She installed a legal security camera in her private home office after discovering that folders had been moved. The camera faced the desk, file cabinet, and entrance.
Two nights later, it recorded Lucas entering at 1:17 in the morning.
He used a key Emma did not know he had copied.
He opened her desk drawer, photographed contract documents, and connected a flash drive to her computer.
Vanessa waited in the hallway.
Her voice was clear on the recording.
“Make sure you delete the access logs.”
Lucas replied, “Emma won’t understand them.”
“She understood enough to confront you.”
“She’s emotional. That makes her predictable.”
Vanessa entered the room.
“What if she tells Arthur?”
“She has no proof.”
“What about the Northstar drafts?”
“Once the board promotes me, it won’t matter. Arthur wants results.”
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“And after the banquet?”
“I file for divorce.”
Emma watched the footage from Rachel’s office.
Her hands remained still in her lap.
Lucas continued speaking.
“The house should be easy. Most of the payments came from my account.”
“That’s not what you told me.”
“Emma’s company paid the original deposit, but we can challenge the records.”
Vanessa leaned against Emma’s desk.
“And her business?”
“Without Northstar, it will collapse within six months.”
The recording ended when they left the room.
Rachel paused the video.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma did not respond immediately.
The affair no longer felt like the worst betrayal.
Lucas had planned to weaken her company, take the house, and leave only after using her work to secure his promotion.
He had not acted impulsively.
He had built a strategy.
Emma finally understood why he had insisted she organize the banquet. He wanted her standing beside him as visual proof of a stable marriage. He wanted Arthur Hawthorne to believe the stolen Northstar proposal represented Lucas’s leadership rather than Emma’s expertise.
“He thinks I’m predictable,” Emma said.
Rachel closed the laptop.
“Are you?”
Emma looked through the office window at the city below.
“I used to be.”
Over the next week, they built their case.
A digital forensic specialist examined Emma’s computer and confirmed unauthorized file transfers.
A former Hawthorne accountant quietly provided expense records showing multiple hotel stays charged to Lucas’s department.
Northstar agreed to preserve every version of Hawthorne’s proposal.
Emma’s original documents contained invisible tracking codes and metadata proving when each section had been created.
Lucas had copied several files without removing them.
The evidence was strong.
But Rachel warned that legal cases could take months.
Emma wanted one immediate result.
She wanted Lucas denied the promotion he had built from her stolen work.
Arthur Hawthorne had a reputation for valuing loyalty, but he also valued the company’s public image. If Emma approached him privately, Lucas might characterize her as a jealous wife.
So Emma decided not to give Lucas the chance.
