Chapter 3 - The Missing Proposal

Emma’s largest client was Northstar Medical Group, a network of private hospitals preparing to expand into four new states.

For six months, Emma had worked on a confidential strategy proposal involving patient outreach, regional partnerships, digital systems, and brand positioning. If Northstar approved the plan, the contract would transform her company.

Only three people had full access to the documents: Emma, her operations director, and her husband.

Lucas had access because Emma sometimes worked from their shared home office.

She had never considered him a security risk.

Until Northstar canceled their final presentation.

The email arrived on Monday morning.

After careful consideration, Northstar Medical Group has decided to proceed with another strategic partner whose proposal more closely reflects our expansion objectives.

Emma read the message twice.

Then she called Dr. Elena Morris, Northstar’s chief operating officer.

Elena sounded uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry, Emma. The board made the decision quickly.”

“Who did they choose?”

“Hawthorne Global Consulting.”

Emma stopped breathing for a moment.

Hawthorne Global had recently opened a strategy division.

Lucas oversaw it.

“That is unexpected,” Emma said carefully.

“Their proposal was extremely detailed.”

“How detailed?”

Silence.

“Emma, I cannot share another company’s materials.”

“I’m not asking you to. I’m asking whether it resembled mine.”

Elena did not answer directly.

“You should speak to your legal counsel.”

That was answer enough.

Emma drove to Lucas’s office without calling.

Hawthorne Global occupied the top floors of a glass tower in downtown Bellhaven. Vanessa sat outside Lucas’s office, typing rapidly.

She stood when Emma approached.

“Do you have an appointment?”

“With my husband?”

“He is preparing for a board meeting.”

Emma continued toward the door.

Vanessa moved in front of her.

“You cannot go in.”

Emma looked down at the hand Vanessa had placed against the doorframe.

“Move.”

Something in Emma’s expression made her obey.

Lucas was standing beside a conference table covered with printed slides.

He looked startled.

“What are you doing here?”

Emma saw the Northstar logo on the first page.

Her Northstar logo.

Not the company’s official mark, but the custom campaign symbol her designer had created for the presentation.

Lucas followed her gaze and closed the folder.

“You stole my proposal.”

His expression hardened.

“Close the door.”

Emma remained where she was.

“You accessed my files and took my work.”

“You are being dramatic.”

“Northstar canceled our contract this morning.”

“Hawthorne submitted a stronger bid.”

“A bid using my strategy.”

Lucas walked around the table.

“Your strategy had potential. I improved it.”

Emma stared at him.

“You admit it?”

“I am saying ideas evolve.”

“You copied confidential projections, partnership targets, and campaign materials.”

“Nothing in business is truly original.”

The door opened behind Emma.

Vanessa entered without being invited.

“Arthur is ready for you,” she said.

Her eyes moved between them.

Lucas turned back to Emma.

“We will discuss this at home.”

“No. We will discuss it now.”

Vanessa spoke softly.

“Perhaps this is not the appropriate setting.”

Emma faced her.

“You don’t get to decide what is appropriate in my marriage or my business.”

Lucas’s face tightened.

“Enough.”

The authority in his voice would have intimidated an employee.

Emma was neither his employee nor afraid.

“Did Vanessa help you access my files?”

Vanessa looked at Lucas.

That single glance revealed coordination.

Lucas lowered his voice.

“Leave before you embarrass yourself.”

Emma stepped toward him.

“You used my work to secure your promotion.”

“I used an opportunity you were too small to handle.”

The cruelty of the sentence silenced the room.

Lucas seemed almost relieved to have said it.

Emma understood then that his betrayal was larger than one stolen proposal.

He did not merely want her work.

He believed he deserved it more than she did.

She left without another word.

Vanessa closed the office door behind her.

Before it shut completely, Emma heard Lucas say, “She’ll calm down.”

May you like

He was wrong.

Emma was done calming down.
