Chapter 8 - The Friend Who Carried Linda’s Name

Claire stared at Elena.

Caldwell.

Linda’s former surname.

Graham Caldwell’s surname.

The name written beside the man who had disappeared after the old fraud investigation.

“You are related to Linda,” Claire said.

Elena nodded.

“She is my aunt.”

The boardroom seemed to narrow around them.

Jonah stepped forward.

“How long have you known?”

“My entire life.”

“And you never told Claire?” he asked.

Elena’s eyes remained on her friend.

“My father was Graham Caldwell.”

Claire remembered the photograph of Daniel, Linda, and Graham standing together twenty-five years earlier.

“Your father disappeared.”

“That is what Adrian wanted people to believe.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

Elena’s voice broke slightly, but she continued.

“My father discovered the first network of shell companies. Linda helped him gather records. They intended to expose Adrian and leave the country before anyone knew what they had done.”

“What stopped them?”

“Adrian found out. My father disappeared two days later. Linda survived because she agreed to work for him.”

Claire shook her head.

“She helped Mason target me.”

“She believed Adrian would hurt Mason if she refused.”

“That does not excuse what she did.”

“No. It doesn’t.”

“Did you become my friend because Linda sent you?”

“No.”

“Then why were you at my father’s last board meeting?”

Elena looked toward Jonah.

“Daniel asked me to attend.”

Jonah frowned.

“I never saw you there.”

“I entered through the service offices. He wanted someone Adrian did not recognize to carry a copy of the ledger.”

“The compass,” Claire said.

Elena nodded.

“Daniel gave it to me.”

“You sent it back in the bouquet.”

“Yes.”

“You sent the note warning me that Mason was not the person I should fear.”

“Yes.”

“You photographed me through the dressing-room window?”

“No.”

“Did you steal the envelope?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the hidden room?”

“Only that it existed. Daniel never told me how to open it.”

Claire tried to separate years of friendship from the secret standing between them.

Elena had supported her after Daniel’s death. She had defended Claire in board meetings, slept on the floor beside her bed during the worst nights of grief, and helped rebuild Vale Meridian’s failing divisions.

Now every memory carried another possibility.

“You approached me because of my father.”

“At first.”

The words hurt more because Elena did not deny them.

“He hired me through a consulting firm. I was supposed to watch the internal accounts and report anyone trying to reach you. After he died, I stayed because you were alone.”

“Because you felt guilty?”

“Because you became my friend.”

Claire turned away.

Jonah lowered his voice.

“Why didn’t Daniel give the complete evidence to the police?”

“Because he believed Adrian had someone inside the department.”

Claire looked at Cole.

He stood near the boardroom door.

“You knew about Elena?”

“No.”

“Did you send the threat?”

Cole’s expression hardened.

“Be careful.”

“Someone with knowledge of the investigation threatened her.”

“I did not.”

Elena opened her bag and removed a small envelope.

“I know who photographed Claire through the window.”

She placed a grainy image on the table.

It showed Linda standing near the eastern hedge at Ashcroft House.

“She took the photograph?” Claire asked.

“No. This image came from a wildlife camera Daniel installed years ago. Linda was meeting the photographer.”

“Who?”

Elena turned over a second photograph.

It showed Mason.

He stood beneath the trees holding a long-lens camera.

Claire felt no surprise this time.

Only exhaustion.

“Mason took the photograph and then pretended to believe it was a reporter.”

“He wanted you afraid of Jonah,” Elena said. “Linda believed the estate documents could expose Adrian. Mason believed helping her would earn him control of your company.”

“Did Linda steal the envelope?”

“Yes.”

“How did it return to the hidden room?”

“I think she realized the replica compass could not open the floor. She returned the envelope and waited for you to lead her to the entrance.”

Claire remembered the disabled cameras and Mason’s constant questions.

“They were watching me.”

“From the moment you accepted the proposal.”

Detective Cole’s phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway to answer.

Jonah examined the old photograph.

“If Linda was helping Graham expose Adrian, why did she later join the scheme?”

“Because Adrian made her believe Graham had betrayed her,” Elena said. “He showed her false records claiming Graham took the money and fled. Linda spent years trying to recover what she believed belonged to her family.”

“And Mason?” Claire asked.

“She raised him to believe the Vales destroyed them.”

Claire looked at the wedding ring still on her finger.

Mason’s love had been built around a grievance inherited from his mother.

Perhaps some of his affection had been real.

That made the betrayal worse, not better.

Cole returned.

His face was tense.

“Mason has disappeared.”

“He was under observation,” Claire said.

“He left his attorney’s office through a service exit.”

“What about Linda?”

“Still in custody.”

“Where would Mason go?”

Elena reached for the photograph of Daniel and the Caldwells.

“My father owned a cabin near the mountain road where Daniel died.”

Claire looked at her.

“Why would Mason know about it?”

“Linda used to take him there as a child.”

Jonah gathered the evidence.

“We tell the police and stay here.”

Claire’s phone vibrated.

A video call from Mason appeared.

Cole motioned for her to answer while officers began tracing the signal.

Claire accepted.

Mason stood inside a dark wooden room.

Behind him, rain struck a window.

“I need you to listen,” he said.

“Where are you?”

“My mother lied to me.”

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“Come back and speak to the police.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

Mason moved closer to the screen.

“I found the files stolen from your father’s safe.”

Everyone in the boardroom froze.

“Where?”

“At the cabin.”

“Who brought them there?”

“I don’t know, but Adrian wasn’t working alone.”

A floorboard creaked behind him.

Mason turned.

The video shook.

Claire heard a door opening.

“Mason?”

He faced the camera again, terrified.

“There’s a recording here from the night your father died.”

“Send it to me.”

“I tried. The file is locked.”

Another shadow crossed the wall.

Mason whispered, “Someone followed me.”

The call ended.

Cole checked the trace.

“We have the location.”

Claire moved toward the door.

Cole blocked her.

“You are not coming.”

“He has my father’s evidence.”

“And someone may be waiting for you.”

“That is exactly why they called.”

Cole shook his head.

“Stay here.”

Claire looked at Elena.

She already knew what Elena would say.

Less than five minutes later, while Cole organized the official response team, Claire and Elena entered the private elevator.

The doors closed.

Elena pressed the underground parking level.

Claire removed her wedding ring.

“What are we doing?” Elena asked.

“Finishing the investigation our fathers started.”
