Chapter 5 - The Man Who Entered Before the Police

The man who stepped into the shattered dining room wore a dark overcoat and carried a leather case.
Claire recognized him immediately.
Adrian Vale.
Her father’s younger brother.
Adrian had served on the Vale Meridian board for more than twenty years. He had comforted Claire after Daniel’s death, defended her appointment as chief executive, and repeatedly warned her that Linda Reed wanted access to the company.
He was also the last person Claire expected to defend Linda.
Detective Cole entered behind him with two uniformed officers.
“What are you doing here?” Claire asked.
Adrian placed his case on an undamaged chair.
“Protecting the company from a public scandal.”
Cole stepped forward.
“We received an automated emergency report.”
“There is no emergency,” Adrian replied. “Only a family argument and an illegally obtained recording.”
Claire looked at Cole.
“He tried to force me to sign a transfer agreement.”
Mason lifted both hands.
“I never forced her.”
“The table broke by itself?” Cole asked.
“She lost control.”
Linda spoke calmly.
“My son asked his wife to sign a standard marital document. Claire became suspicious, attacked him, and began making accusations.”
Claire held up the phone.
“The entire conversation is recorded.”
Adrian looked toward it.
“That device belongs to Vale Meridian.”
“It is my personal phone.”
“It was purchased through the executive technology account. Any recording made on it may be company property.”
Claire understood why he had spoken about ownership before entering.
He was laying the foundation to seize the evidence.
Adrian opened his leather case and removed a document bearing the Vale Meridian seal.
“As acting chairman, I am ordering you to surrender the phone pending an internal investigation.”
“You are not acting chairman.”
“I became acting chairman at midnight.”
Claire glanced at the clock.
12:03 a.m.
October 14 had begun.
Adrian placed another document on the table.
It stated that Claire had temporarily transferred her executive authority after demonstrating unstable behavior during a private family event.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
A perfect digital copy.
“I never signed that.”
“The authorization was submitted two weeks ago.”
“Using stolen credentials.”
Adrian turned to Cole.
“You can see the problem. Claire is distressed. She has made serious accusations against her new husband, his mother, and now the board.”
Cole did not move.
“I still need to review the recording.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“This is a corporate matter.”
“A demand for property accompanied by intimidation is not a corporate matter.”
Mason looked between them.
“Detective, Claire restrained me.”
“Do you need medical attention?”
“No.”
“Did she prevent you from leaving?”
Mason hesitated.
“No.”
“Did you reach for her after she refused to sign?”
Linda cut in.
“Do not answer leading questions.”
Cole faced her.
“I am speaking to your son.”
Mason’s eyes moved toward Adrian.
Claire saw it.
So did Cole.
Adrian was not there to protect Mason or Linda. They were waiting for his instructions.
Claire opened the recording application.
“The file uploaded before you entered.”
Adrian’s calm expression changed.
“To which server?”
“My attorney’s.”
Jonah appeared in the doorway behind the officers.
“Several servers,” he corrected. “Including an evidence archive outside Vale Meridian’s network.”
Linda turned pale.
Adrian stared at Jonah.
“You were removed as estate counsel.”
“By a forged board resolution.”
Jonah held up a certified document.
“The trust transferred at midnight. Every document Daniel Vale protected beneath this house now belongs legally to Claire.”
For the first time, Adrian looked afraid.
Claire stepped closer to him.
“My father said Linda was protecting the person leading the operation.”
Linda’s eyes closed briefly.
Mason whispered, “Mom?”
Adrian ignored him.
“Daniel was paranoid.”
“He was investigating stolen company money.”
“He was destroying the company with accusations.”
“He left evidence.”
Adrian’s gaze moved toward the library.
It lasted less than a second.
But Claire saw it.
He knew about the hidden room.
Cole placed himself between Adrian and the doorway.
“No one leaves.”
Adrian smiled.
“You do not have authority to detain me.”
Cole played the uploaded audio from his own phone.
Linda’s recorded voice filled the room again.
“Take her money, Mason. Make her obey.”
Cole stopped the recording.
“That gives me enough reason to ask more questions.”
“It proves nothing,” Adrian said.
“Then you will not mind staying.”
Mason stepped away from Linda.
“You told me Claire would sign.”
Linda turned toward him.
“Be quiet.”
“You said it was only a management agreement.”
“It was.”
“You said Adrian would protect us.”
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“Mason.”
But panic had already broken through Mason’s obedience.
“You said once the shares transferred, no one could undo it.”
Cole activated his body camera.
“Who said that?”
Mason stared at Adrian.
Linda moved between them.
“My son is confused.”
“He is not confused,” Claire said. “He is realizing you planned to abandon him.”
Mason looked at the leather folder on the table.
His name appeared throughout the agreement.
Adrian’s did not.
If the plan failed, Mason would appear to be the sole beneficiary.
Linda’s message would make her an accomplice.
Adrian could claim he knew nothing.
“You used me,” Mason said.
Adrian’s response was quiet.
“You volunteered.”
Linda grabbed Mason’s arm.
“Stop talking.”
He pulled away.
“No. You said Claire’s father stole the company from us. You said the money belonged to our family.”
Claire stared at Linda.
“What did my father steal?”
Linda’s face became expressionless.
Adrian stepped toward the library.
Cole blocked him.
Then every light in Ashcroft House went out.
The chandelier darkened.
The police lights disappeared from the windows.
Someone screamed in the hallway.
A heavy door slammed beneath the floor.
Emergency lights flickered on seconds later.
Adrian was still in the dining room.
Linda and Mason were still beside the table.
But Jonah was no longer standing in the doorway.
Claire ran toward the library.
The carpet had been pulled aside.
The hidden entrance stood open.
At the bottom of the stairs, the safe door was wide.
Every file inside had vanished.
On the floor lay Jonah’s broken glasses.
Beside them, a phone played Daniel Vale’s final warning.
“The person who betrays you will be the one you trust enough to give the key.”
May you like
Claire looked down at the brass compass in her hand.
Then she realized the key was gone.
