Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Offer

Claire did not shout.
She walked quickly into the garden, took Elena by the arm, and guided her inside without explaining why.
The red point disappeared.
Detective Cole arrived six minutes later with two officers. They searched neighboring buildings and the river path but found no weapon and no observer.
Cole examined the note.
“Someone wants you frightened enough to cancel the board meeting.”
“Or frightened enough to accept Adrian’s offer,” Claire said.
“You are not going to that meeting without protection.”
“If I do not appear, the board removes me.”
“We can request a delay.”
“Adrian controls enough directors to reject it.”
Cole looked at Elena.
“The threat may be real.”
Elena folded her arms.
“So is the threat to every person whose retirement fund Adrian has been stealing.”
Claire shook her head.
“You are leaving the city.”
“No.”
“That is not a request.”
“And you are not my chief executive outside the office.”
“I am the person whose investigation placed you in danger.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You are also the person he wants isolated.”
Cole interrupted.
“We use the meeting. Claire attends with a recording device. My team remains in the building. Elena stays in a secure room under police protection.”
Claire looked at the anonymous note.
“Adrian will search me.”
“Then the device cannot be on you.”
The emergency board meeting began at three that afternoon.
Vale Meridian’s headquarters occupied the top floors of a glass tower overlooking the city. Reporters filled the street below.
Inside the boardroom, Adrian sat at the head of the table.
Eleven directors waited in silence.
Mason and Linda were not present, but their attorney occupied two chairs near the door.
Claire entered wearing a dark suit instead of her wedding dress. The bruised flowers and shattered dining room belonged to another version of her life.
Adrian gestured toward the empty chair opposite him.
“Thank you for coming.”
“You threatened my friend.”
Several directors shifted.
Adrian smiled.
“Beginning with an accusation will not help your position.”
“You forged my authorization and attempted to take control of my shares.”
“Your husband submitted the document.”
“You prepared it.”
“Can you prove that?”
Claire placed the leather agreement from the dining room on the table.
“The metadata identifies a Vale Meridian legal server.”
Adrian did not look at it.
“The board is prepared to avoid a public trial.”
“What do you want?”
“Your resignation as chief executive. Transfer your voting shares to an independent trust managed by the board. In return, Mason withdraws his complaint, Linda issues a statement supporting your recovery, and the company protects your reputation.”
“You mean the company protects your reputation.”
“I am offering you a future.”
“You offered my father the same kind of deal.”
The room became completely still.
Adrian leaned back.
“My brother was ill.”
“He recorded you.”
Claire placed a speaker on the table and played Daniel’s conversation with Adrian.
The directors listened as Adrian threatened that Claire would inherit Daniel’s war.
When the file ended, Adrian remained calm.
“A private argument taken out of context.”
Claire opened her tablet.
“The mirrored ledger is not out of context.”
Financial records appeared on the boardroom screens.
Transfer dates, shell companies, hidden commissions, and false consulting payments filled the display.
Adrian’s attorney stood.
“This meeting must end immediately.”
Claire continued.
“Reed Strategic received twelve million dollars over eight years. Calder Automotive Services received two hundred thousand dollars the day before my father’s crash.”
One director looked at Adrian.
“Is this authentic?”
“No,” Adrian said.
Jonah entered with two forensic accountants.
“It has been authenticated against Vale Meridian’s internal banking records.”
Adrian turned toward Claire.
“You stole confidential data.”
“My father created the ledger. It transferred to me through his trust at midnight.”
The attorney moved toward the door.
Detective Cole entered before he reached it.
“No one leaves until financial-crimes officers complete their instructions.”
Adrian’s expression did not change, but his fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
Claire looked at the directors.
“The resolution removing me was based on a forged authorization. I request an immediate vote to suspend Adrian Vale and refer every related transaction to federal investigators.”
The oldest director raised her hand.
“I second the motion.”
Six more hands followed.
Adrian watched each one rise.
The vote passed eight to three.
For the first time in his career, Adrian Vale was removed from power.
Cole approached him.
“Adrian Vale, you are being detained in connection with financial fraud, falsification of corporate records, witness intimidation, and conspiracy.”
Adrian stood slowly.
“You think this ends because a board raised its hands?”
Claire met his eyes.
“It ends with the truth.”
“No,” he replied. “It ends when people decide which truth is safer.”
Cole placed him in handcuffs.
The directors avoided Adrian’s gaze as officers led him toward the door.
Claire should have felt victorious.
Instead, she remembered the anonymous message.
The bride has the real ledger.
Only four people had known Claire possessed it before the threat arrived.
Claire, Elena, Jonah, and Detective Cole.
Adrian stopped beside Cole.
He looked directly at Claire.
“You should ask who sent you the compass.”
Then he turned toward Elena.
“And you should ask your best friend why she attended Daniel’s final board meeting under another name.”
Elena’s face changed.
Claire felt the victory disappear beneath her feet.
“What is he talking about?”
Elena looked toward the directors.
“Not here.”
“Answer me.”
Adrian smiled as Cole led him from the room.
Elena closed the boardroom door.
“My name was not always Elena Torres,” she said.
“What was it?”
May you like
Elena looked at the mirrored ledger on the screens.
“Elena Caldwell.”
