Chapter 8 - The Call Marcus Feared
Marcus was tightening a bolt on a customer’s motorcycle when his phone produced a sharp emergency alarm.
MARGARET HALE MEDICAL DISTRESS SIGNAL ACTIVATED.
He dropped the wrench.
A second notification appeared from the hidden camera.
Marcus opened the live feed and heard Dana’s threat.
He called emergency services while running toward his motorcycle.
“My mother is seventy-five,” he told the dispatcher. “Her caregiver is threatening her. There may have been physical abuse. Send police and an ambulance.”
The dispatcher ordered him not to enter the house until officers arrived.
Marcus knew the instruction was reasonable.
He also knew he could not remain at the shop.
He rode faster than he ever had, but the journey felt endless.
Meanwhile, the medical response operator spoke through the emergency device beneath Margaret’s table.
“Margaret, help is coming. Can you hear me?”
Margaret had collapsed against the sofa after Dana left the room.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Are you injured?”
“My wrist hurts.”
“Stay where you are. The police are almost there.”
Across the street, Evelyn heard sirens and rushed outside.
Dana emerged from Margaret’s house carrying her handbag.
“Where are you going?” Evelyn demanded.
Dana moved toward her car.
A police vehicle turned onto the street and blocked the driveway.
Dana attempted to explain that Margaret had become confused and aggressive. Then the medical team entered the house and found Margaret crying beside the broken cup.
One paramedic noticed marks around her wrist.
Margaret finally said the words everyone had been waiting to hear.
“She hurt me before. I was afraid to tell my son.”
The officers separated Dana from Margaret.
At the hospital, doctors treated Margaret’s injuries and contacted an elder-abuse investigator. They preserved the security footage, photographed the damaged room, and collected Margaret’s financial documents.
