Chapter 6 - The Neighbor Who Refused to Look Away

Evelyn Shaw lived across the street and had known Margaret for thirty-two years.

They had raised children together, exchanged holiday meals, and supported each other through their husbands’ deaths.

Evelyn noticed when Margaret stopped visiting.

Dana told her Margaret was tired.

Evelyn noticed when the curtains remained closed for several days.

Dana said the sunlight caused headaches.

Then Evelyn saw Dana carrying boxes from Margaret’s house and placing them in her car.

“What are those?” Evelyn asked from the sidewalk.

“Donations.”

“Margaret never mentioned donating anything.”

“She asked me to handle it.”

Evelyn walked closer. One box contained a silver tea service that had belonged to Margaret’s grandmother.

“That is not being donated.”

Dana shut the trunk.

“You should mind your own business.”

“Margaret is my business.”

The following morning, Evelyn visited Marcus at his repair shop.

The roar of engines filled the building as mechanics worked beneath raised motorcycles. Marcus listened silently while Evelyn described the boxes, the closed curtains, and Dana’s hostility.

“I installed a camera,” he admitted.

“Did you see anything?”

“Not enough. She knows when she’s being recorded.”

Evelyn placed a hand on his arm.

“Then stop waiting for enough.”

Marcus wanted to remove Dana immediately, but the care agency warned him that Margaret had repeatedly defended her. Without a direct statement, evidence of abuse, or proof of theft, Dana could claim she was being dismissed because of a misunderstanding.

Worse, Margaret still refused to accuse her.

“She’s protecting me,” Marcus said.

“From what?”

“I don’t know.”

Evelyn looked toward the motorcycles.

“Your mother spent her life teaching you when to stand your ground. Perhaps she needs someone to remind her that accepting rescue is not weakness.”

That evening, Evelyn called Margaret’s landline.

Dana answered.

“I need to speak with Margaret.”

“She’s asleep.”

“Wake her.”

Dana hung up.

Evelyn called again.

This time, no one answered.

Across the street, she watched a shadow move behind Margaret’s closed curtains.
