Chapter 2 - The First Locked Door

The changes began gradually.

Dana started answering Margaret’s phone before bringing it to her.

“Your son called,” she would say. “I told him you were resting.”

Sometimes Marcus would call again, confused because Margaret had never spoken to him.

Dana always had an explanation.

“You were sleeping.”

“You had just taken your medication.”

“I didn’t want him upsetting you.”

Then Dana began moving things.

Margaret’s checkbook disappeared from the kitchen drawer. Her house keys were no longer kept beside the door. The emergency contact list vanished from the refrigerator.

When Margaret questioned her, Dana sighed as though speaking to a difficult child.

“You asked me to put them somewhere safe.”

“I did not.”

“You probably forgot.”

Margaret had always trusted her memory. Dana’s certainty made that trust feel fragile.

One afternoon, Margaret tried to leave through the back door to visit her neighbor, Evelyn. The door would not open.

Dana had locked it and taken the key.

“It’s icy outside,” Dana said.

“The pavement is dry.”

“You could fall.”

“I can decide whether I want to visit my friend.”

Dana stepped between Margaret and the door.

“Your son hired me to keep you safe.”

“My son hired you to help me.”

“Sometimes those are the same thing.”

That evening, Margaret called Marcus.

She intended to tell him everything, but when he answered, Dana stood close enough to hear every word.

“How are you feeling?” Marcus asked.

Margaret looked at Dana.

Dana smiled while slowly shaking her head.

“I’m fine,” Margaret said.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Just tired.”

After the call ended, Dana took the phone.

“You nearly caused a problem,” she said.

“I was speaking to my son.”

“You were about to frighten him over nothing.”

Margaret reached for the phone, but Dana placed it inside her uniform pocket.

“You can have it tomorrow when you’re calmer.”

For the first time, Margaret understood that the locked door was not meant to keep danger outside.

It was meant to keep her inside.
