Chapter 7 - the recorder in the garage)

The message came from Owen himself.

Kallie called immediately.

He answered in a whisper.

"Aunt Kallie?"

"Where are you?"

"Home."

"Did you find it?"

"Yeah."

"Where?"

"In a box in the garage."

Kallie stood.

"Have you listened to it?"

"Some."

Something in his voice changed her breathing.

"What did you hear?"

"You should come here."

"Your mom knows?"

"No."

"Owen, if there's something related to the investigation, you need to tell an adult."

"I am telling you."

Kallie closed her eyes.

He was right.

"Okay. I'm coming."

Marissa stayed with Paisley while Kallie drove to Jennifer's house.

Owen opened the garage door before she even knocked.

He looked younger than sixteen under the bright fluorescent light.

His backpack sat on a workbench.

Beside it was a small black recorder.

"I forgot I switched memory cards for class," he said.

Kallie stared at it.

"Where was this during the party?"

"In my backpack."

"Where was the backpack?"

"Kitchen counter at first. Then Aunt Diane told me to move it because food was going there, so I put it by the hallway."

Kallie's mouth went dry.

"Was it recording?"

Owen nodded.

"For almost two hours."

"Why?"

"I was supposed to collect background sound for a documentary assignment. People talking, dishes, party noise. I started it and forgot."

Kallie looked at the device.

"Did it record the slap?"

"I think so."

He pressed play.

At first there was noise.

Music.

Laughter.

Children.

Kallie's pulse hammered.

Then Paisley's voice.

"Pretty."

Seth's voice.

"Don't touch that."

Kallie heard herself.

"Seth, she's fine."

Then the sound.

Sharp.

Distinct.

The slap.

Paisley's scream followed immediately.

Kallie covered her mouth.

Hearing it was worse than remembering it.

Owen stopped the recording.

"I'm sorry."

Kallie looked away.

"It's okay."

"No. I mean I'm sorry I didn't find it earlier."

"You didn't know."

Owen stared at the recorder.

"There's more."

Kallie's eyes returned to him.

"What?"

"I skipped ahead after you left."

He pressed play again.

Party noise had decreased.

Someone was moving plates.

Then Seth's voice came clearly.

"She needed it. Kallie lets that kid do whatever she wants."

Diane answered.

"You hit her too hard. Her cheek was bright red."

Kallie's knees felt weak.

Seth responded.

"So what? She'll survive."

Owen watched Kallie's face.

"Keep going," she whispered.

Richard's voice entered.

"We need everyone on the same page before Kallie starts calling people."

Kallie grabbed the edge of the workbench.

Diane:

"What if she goes to the police?"

Richard:

"Then nobody saw anything."

Kallie closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not just the assault.

The plan.

The lie.

The entire structure of the last week captured without anyone knowing.

Then another voice.

Aunt Linda.

"Maybe Seth should just call her and apologize."

Seth laughed.

"For what? She needs to learn that the world isn't going to rearrange itself around her kid."

Diane replied.

"If anybody asks, Paisley fell against the coffee table. We all agree on that."

Kallie's eyes opened.

"Stop."

Owen stopped the recorder.

Kallie could barely breathe.

She had spent days wondering whether anyone would believe her.

Now her family's own voices answered the question.

Owen said quietly, "There's another part."

Kallie looked at him.

"How much?"

"Almost forty minutes."

"Does it get worse?"

Owen did not answer.

That was answer enough.

He played another section.

Richard again.

"What about the people in the living room?"

A male relative:

"Jennifer saw it."

Richard:

"Jennifer needs to understand that family loyalty matters."

Then Seth.

"If Erin finds out, she'll use this in court."

Diane:

"Then make sure Hallie doesn't tell her."

Kallie felt nausea rise.

They had been planning not only to protect Seth.

They had been planning to silence his child.

Owen switched it off.

Kallie stared at the recorder.

"We need to give this to Detective Cole."

"I know."

"Don't send copies through text."

"I already made two."

Kallie looked at him sharply.

"Where?"

"One on my laptop. One on a flash drive."

Smart kid.

"Don't delete anything."

"I won't."

Jennifer entered the garage.

She had clearly been crying.

"I heard part of it."

Kallie looked at her.

Jennifer shook her head.

"I'm done."

"With what?"

"With pretending Uncle Richard is just strict. With pretending Diane is just difficult. With pretending Seth only loses his temper sometimes."

She looked at Owen.

"They wanted my son to learn that family loyalty means helping adults lie about hurting a baby."

Paisley was not technically a baby anymore.

But Kallie did not correct her.

Jennifer continued.

"They don't get to teach him that."

The next morning, Detective Cole collected the recorder.

He documented the memory card.

The copies.

The device.

The chain of custody.

Then he said, "Do not tell your family what we have."

Kallie nodded.

"Why?"

"Because I want to interview them again first."

Kallie understood.

Let them repeat the lies.

So they did.

Diane gave another statement.

She said Seth accidentally made contact with Paisley while reaching for the ribbon.

Richard said he never discussed witness accounts.

Seth said he had never admitted intentionally striking the child.

Aunt Linda said she was unsure what happened.

Each statement was recorded.

Only after that did Detective Cole tell Kallie's attorney that the audio had been authenticated enough for formal review.

And only then did the family learn a recording existed.

Kallie's phone exploded.

Diane:

What recording?

Richard:

Call me immediately.

Seth:

Did Owen record us without permission?

Then:

That kid had no right.

Then:

You better not use something illegally recorded.

Kallie saved every message.

She did not answer.

Ten minutes later, someone began pounding on her front door.

Kallie looked at the porch camera.

Seth stood outside.

His face was red.

He slammed his fist against the door again.

"Kallie, open up."

Paisley began crying upstairs.

May you like

Kallie reached for her phone.

And called 911.
