Chapter 4 - The Leak Inside the Walls

Evelyn did not react to betrayal with anger.

She reacted with architecture.

Within an hour, phones were collected, passwords changed, access logs copied, and every employee in her firm assigned a separate false detail. One person was told Meline would visit the bank. Another was told she would return home. A third was told she would meet police at noon.

"We wait to see which lie moves," Evelyn said.

Meline sat in a glass office watching the firm transform around her.

"You have done this before."

"Not with my own staff."

"That is not what I meant."

Evelyn looked at her.

Meline remembered something Eleanor had once said after a charity dinner. Evelyn never trusts a room until she knows every exit.

"What happened to you?" Meline asked.

Evelyn turned back to her computer. "Your grandmother hired me after I testified against my first firm."

"For what?"

"Helping clients hide stolen pension money."

"You helped them?"

"I found out too late."

The answer was flat, but shame lived beneath it.

Meline did not press.

At 11:20, the first trap moved.

The employee told that Meline would visit the bank received a message from an unknown number.

Is she bringing the original trust certificate?

The employee was Nora Bell, Evelyn's senior paralegal.

Nora denied knowing the sender.

Lena checked her phone and found the number connected to a prepaid device purchased near Jason's office.

"That proves someone thinks Nora knows," Evelyn said. "It does not prove Nora told them."

At 11:43, Meline's mother arrived at the bank Evelyn had named in the false story.

At 11:47, Jason arrived through the side entrance.

The bank's security chief called Evelyn.

"We have them on camera," she said.

Evelyn looked at Nora.

Nora began to cry.

"I didn't tell them."

"Then who did?"

Nora wiped her face. "I told my husband I had to work late. He knows someone at Meridian Crest. I didn't think—"

"Who?"

"Victor Hale's son."

The connection was not enough to explain the hotel recorder, but it revealed how easily information escaped when people believed private conversations remained harmless.

Evelyn suspended Nora's access and sent her home.

Meline watched through the conference room window as Nora walked toward the elevator, shoulders shaking.

"You believe her," Meline said.

"I believe fear makes honest people careless and guilty people convincing."

"What do you believe about me?"

Evelyn's gaze sharpened. "That you are more dangerous to your family than they understand."

Meline looked away.

Her phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Meline asleep in her own bedroom two nights earlier.

The image had been taken from the doorway.

Below it, one sentence:

You should have signed.

Lena took the phone.

"Do not respond."

Meline's stomach turned.

"Jason had keys."

"Then we assume he made copies."

"I stayed there alone."

"Not again."

The investigation moved to Meline's townhouse.

Police found no forced entry. Lena found a tiny camera hidden inside the smoke detector facing the bed.

A second device was embedded in the hallway thermostat.

A third had been placed behind the bathroom mirror.

Meline stood in the center of her bedroom while strangers photographed the evidence.

Every private moment of the past month became contaminated.

She remembered changing clothes, crying after her grandmother's funeral, rehearsing vows into the mirror, calling Jason when he claimed to be working late.

Lena removed the final camera and sealed it in a bag.

"They wanted leverage."

"Or control," Meline said.

In the closet, Evelyn found a white envelope taped beneath a drawer.

Inside was a copy of the prenuptial agreement Meline had never signed.

A yellow note was attached in Jason's handwriting.

Use the mother if she resists.

Meline handed it to Evelyn.

"What does that mean?"

"We will find out."

On the drive back, Meline received a call from the wedding venue.

A woman introduced herself as the events director.

"Ms. Vale, I need to confirm tomorrow's media walkthrough."

Meline frowned. "What media walkthrough?"

"The exclusive coverage arrangement. Mr. Cole finalized it last week."

Jason had sold access to their wedding.

The events director hesitated. "He said the ceremony would include a major family announcement."

Meline felt cold.

"What announcement?"

"I assumed it concerned the merger."

"What merger?"

The woman went silent.

When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.

"Meridian Crest and Cole Capital."

May you like

Jason had not planned to steal money after marrying her.

He had planned to announce control of her company during the wedding itself.
