Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath the Veil

The ballroom screen showed Thomas seated in a dark room.

No location metadata appeared. His voice reached every speaker.

"For thirty years," he said, "the Vale family has benefited from a lie."

Meline entered the ballroom.

Every face turned toward her.

Her father's mouth fell open when he saw the red dress. Her mother began crying before anyone had accused her of anything. Sydney walked several steps behind Meline. Evelyn and Lena separated, moving toward opposite sides of the room.

Jason stood at the altar.

He smiled as Meline approached.

"You came."

"I own the building."

"Not the part beneath it."

Meline stopped ten feet away.

Onscreen, Thomas continued.

"Eleanor stole Meridian Crest through fraud. She hid my assets, corrupted records, and transferred control to a child she believed she could shape."

Meline looked at the cameras.

"Then come say that in person."

A few guests murmured.

Thomas smiled.

"You sound like her."

Meline lifted her phone.

"I have Rebecca's recordings."

The smile disappeared.

Around the room, men in dark suits shifted.

Lena's voice came through Meline's earpiece.

"Four armed. Possibly six."

Meline continued, "I also have the shipping manifests, the bribery accounts, and Victor's files."

Her father stared at her.

"You found them?"

Meline saw fear enter his face.

Not fear of prison.

Fear of Thomas.

The giant screen changed.

A live image appeared from beneath the ballroom.

Stone walls. Metal shelves. A vault door.

Noah stood inside with his hands bound.

Beside him, Victor Hale held a gun.

Thomas's voice said, "The archive opens with two keys. One was hidden in the ring. The other belongs to Eleanor's chosen heir."

Meline felt every eye move toward her red dress.

Jason stepped closer.

"You can end this."

"By marrying you?"

"By finishing what your grandmother started."

Sydney laughed bitterly. "He says that to everyone."

Jason ignored her.

Meline looked at Noah on the screen.

"Why is he here?"

Thomas answered.

"Because Noah was the first man assigned to gain your trust."

Meline's breath caught.

Noah raised his head.

"He left before completing the assignment," Thomas said. "A rare moral crisis."

Noah spoke through split lips.

"I left because they threatened you."

Meline remembered the message that ended their relationship. Cold, short, unlike him.

She had hated him for years.

Jason leaned near her ear.

"Open the vault and he lives."

"What is inside?"

"The original ownership records."

Evelyn interrupted. "Do not believe him."

Thomas's image returned.

"Also inside is the evidence of who killed Eleanor."

The room changed.

Meline's grandmother had been declared dead from a stroke.

Meline looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked genuinely shocked.

Thomas said, "Eleanor knew the wedding would bring every branch of the family together. She designed the trust so the archive could only be opened in the presence of her successor."

Meline's father moved toward the exit.

The doors remained locked.

"Open them," he shouted.

Jason laughed. "You wanted the wedding. Stay for it."

Meline turned to him.

"Did you kill her?"

Jason's eyes held hers.

"No."

The answer came too easily.

"Did my father?"

Her father shouted, "Do not listen to him."

Thomas spoke from the screen.

"Your father administered the final medication."

Meline's mother made a broken sound.

Her father pointed at the screen.

"He ordered it. He said she was going to destroy us."

The confession fell into the room like glass.

Cameras transmitted everything.

Jason's smile vanished.

Meline understood the first victory.

Her father had confessed publicly.

But Thomas had planned that too.

The ballroom floor trembled.

A mechanical lock opened somewhere below.

Sydney handed Meline the small key from the ring box.

"The second key," she whispered. "Do you have it?"

Meline thought of Eleanor's letter.

The ledger is not a book. It is a person.

Find the child in the red coat.

Meline looked down at her dress.

Then she remembered the stolen mitten, returned with the order that the bride wear red.

Not an order.

A clue.

She reached into the lining Evelyn had sewn into the dress that morning. Inside was the red mitten, placed there after forensic examination.

Something hard pressed beneath the old fabric.

Meline tore the seam.

A thin brass key fell into her palm.

The ballroom became silent.

Thomas smiled on the screen.

"At last."

A panel behind the stage opened, revealing a staircase descending into darkness.

Lena moved toward Meline.

"We wait for tactical entry."

A gunshot sounded below.

Onscreen, Noah fell to one knee.

Victor pressed the weapon to his head.

Thomas said, "You have sixty seconds."

Meline looked around the ballroom.

At her father, exposed.

At her mother, trembling.

At Sydney, guilty and afraid.

At Jason, who had stolen years from her.

At Evelyn, whose family carried its own secrets.

At the hundreds of employees watching from outside the room.

Then she looked toward the staircase.

She closed her fingers around both keys.

Jason stepped beside her.

"I am coming with you."

"No."

"You will not survive alone."

Meline turned to him.

"That is what all of you needed me to believe."

She descended the first step.

The screen flickered.

For one second, the image from the vault changed.

Behind Victor, a woman appeared.

Older than Meline's mother.

Wearing a red coat.

Clara gasped.

"My mother."

Rebecca.

Alive.

The woman looked directly into the camera and raised a finger to her lips.

Then the feed went black.

Thomas's voice disappeared.

Every lock in the ballroom released at once.

The guests surged toward the exits.

Meline remained on the staircase, staring into the darkness below.

From somewhere inside the tunnel, a woman's voice called her name.

Not Rebecca's voice.

Eleanor's.

Meline stopped breathing.

The grandmother she had buried six months earlier whispered again.

May you like

"Meline, do not open the vault."

Then someone behind her pulled the ballroom doors shut.
