Chapter 10 - The House That Burned Twice
The coastal house had been rebuilt.
Property records showed it belonged to a shell company controlled by Rookwell Partners.
Meline, Evelyn, and Lena drove there before dawn under a sky the color of steel.
The road narrowed through dead grass and pine. At the end stood a modern black house overlooking the harbor. No lights were visible.
Lena checked the perimeter.
"The security system is active."
"Can we enter?" Meline asked.
"Not legally."
Evelyn held up Eleanor's letter. "The address is evidence, not permission."
Meline looked at the house.
Then a curtain moved upstairs.
Someone was watching.
The front door opened.
A woman stepped outside.
She was in her early forties, too young to be Rebecca, with dark hair and a face that made Meline's heart stumble.
She looked like Sydney.
Not exactly.
But enough.
"My name is Clara Hale," the woman said.
Victor's daughter.
Evelyn stiffened.
Clara held both hands where Lena could see them.
"I called you."
"The voice on the phone," Meline said.
Clara nodded.
"You said Jason was supposed to marry Sydney."
"He was."
"Why?"
Clara looked toward the harbor.
"Because Sydney was supposed to inherit."
Meline felt Evelyn turn toward her.
Clara invited them inside.
The house smelled faintly of smoke despite its new walls. In the living room, old photographs covered a table. Rebecca appeared in several of them, growing from a child into a young woman.
"She survived," Meline said.
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
Clara's mouth tightened.
"She died six years ago."
This time, there was a body.
Clara showed them a death certificate, hospital records, and an urn on the mantel.
"She was my mother."
Victor had raised Clara publicly as his daughter, but Rebecca was her mother and Thomas Vale was her legal guardian for years after the fire.
The family tree twisted again.
Clara explained that after the first fire, Thomas took Rebecca and disappeared through Black Harbor routes. Eleanor allowed the world to believe both Thomas and Rebecca were dead because men involved in the shipping crimes wanted Rebecca as leverage.
"Why was she the ledger?" Meline asked.
"Because she saw everything. Names, shipments, meetings. She had a near-perfect memory."
"Then why did Grandma write that I should find her?"
"Because she did not know Rebecca had died."
Clara opened a safe.
Inside were recorded interviews Rebecca made before her death.
The first tape contained names of judges, bankers, customs officers, and company executives.
The second contained Meline's father's name.
The third contained Victor's.
The fourth contained Thomas Vale's.
Clara did not play the fourth.
"What is on it?" Meline asked.
"The reason Rookwell exists."
Evelyn stepped forward. "Who controls Rookwell?"
Clara looked at Meline.
"Your grandfather."
Meline felt the room tilt.
"Thomas is alive?"
"He was alive three months ago."
"Why is he coming to the wedding?"
"To reclaim Meridian Crest."
The plan became clearer.
Thomas had spent decades building a shadow network. Meline's father, Victor, and Jason were not the architects. They were participants competing for survival.
The merger would place company assets within reach of Rookwell.
The marriage would give Jason access.
Sydney's role was to control Jason.
Meline's role was to sign.
"What happens if I do not?" Meline asked.
Clara answered without hesitation.
"They trigger the debt, collapse the company, and buy it through bankruptcy."
Thousands of employees would lose pensions and jobs. Properties would be sold. Evidence hidden within company archives might disappear.
Meline understood why Eleanor had transferred control to her.
Not to make her rich.
To force her to choose what survived.
A car engine sounded outside.
Lena moved to the window.
Three black vehicles blocked the road.
Clara looked at the front door.
"They found us."
Glass shattered in the back of the house.
Smoke rolled through the hallway.
