Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - Learning to Speak AgainAfter the party, Millie stopped sleeping alone.
She woke whenever she heard the washing machine. She apologized constantly. If she spilled water, she apologized. If she asked for a bedtime story, she apologized. If Daniel looked tired, she apologized for making him take care of her. Each apology reminded him how long fear had been growing unnoticed.Daniel found a child therapist named Dr. Lena Morris, who used toys and drawings to help children describe difficult experiences.During their first visit, Millie placed Bunny inside a wooden dollhouse and shut every door.“Why is Bunny hiding?” Dr. Morris asked.“Because the loud people will hear her.”“What does Bunny want to say?”Millie whispered, “That she didn’t do anything wrong.”Daniel sat outside the therapy room and cried.Healing did not happen in one dramatic moment. It happened in small steps.Millie began choosing her own clothes again. She returned to kindergarten. She learned that adults were responsible for managing their own feelings. Most importantly, she learned that telling the truth did not make bad things happen. Bad things had already been happening; telling the truth allowed them to stop.Daniel also entered therapy. He spoke about Nora, guilt and the way his family had trained him to avoid uncomfortable truths. He realized Evelyn had often protected Claire when they were children. If Claire broke something, Daniel was told not to upset her. If Claire lied, the family changed the story to preserve peace.Daniel had mistaken the absence of arguments for family harmony. In reality, everyone had learned to organize themselves around Claire’s behavior.Millie had been the first person small enough to refuse the arrangement without realizing how powerful it was.On what would have been Nora’s thirty-fifth birthday, Daniel took Millie to the lake house. They planted a young magnolia tree near the water.“Will Mommy know it’s here?” Millie asked.“I think she would like it.”Millie placed Bunny beside the tree. The toy had been returned after investigators copied the recording. Its plastic heart was scratched, and one ear had been repaired.Millie pressed the button.Nora’s voice played softly across the lake.“Good morning, my brave girl.”Millie smiled. Then she recorded a new message.“Mommy, Daddy knows the truth now. I helped him find it.”Daniel knelt beside her.“You did more than help.”“What did I do?”“You reminded me how to listen.”Millie considered this.“Were you bad at listening?”Daniel laughed through his tears.“For a while.”“Are you better now?”“I’m trying to be.”Millie picked up Bunny.“Mommy said trying matters.”Daniel looked toward the magnolia tree moving gently in the wind.“Yes,” he said. “She did.”
