Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 - The Lake House KeyRebecca Sloan’s office had closed for the weekend, but Daniel found an emergency number on her website.
She answered cautiously. When Daniel introduced himself, she became silent.“I have been waiting for this call for eighteen months,” she said.Rebecca agreed to meet him at the Mercer lake house the following morning. The house stood beside a quiet stretch of water an hour outside the city. Nora had loved it because it was the only Mercer property without marble floors, staff or family portraits.Daniel had avoided the place since her death. He arrived with Aaron and Millie shortly after sunrise.Rebecca waited on the porch holding a leather briefcase. She was a silver-haired woman in her sixties with a calm, direct expression.“I’m sorry about Nora,” she told Daniel. “She loved you very much, even during the worst part.”Daniel looked away.“I didn’t believe her.”“She knew the evidence against her was convincing.”“That doesn’t excuse me.”“No,” Rebecca said. “But the truth gives you an opportunity to do better.”Inside the house, she asked Millie if she still had the silver bracelet Nora had given her.Millie held up her wrist.A tiny key hung among the bracelet’s charms.Daniel had seen it hundreds of times and assumed it was decorative.Rebecca guided them to Nora’s old writing desk. The key opened a hidden compartment beneath the lowest drawer.Inside were copies of bank records, emails and security photographs showing Claire entering Thomas’s office late at night. There was also a flash drive and a sealed letter addressed to Daniel. His hands shook as he opened it.Daniel,If you are reading this, then either I finally proved the truth or I was never given the chance. I know the records make me look guilty. I also know you are frightened, angry and trying to protect Millie.Claire has been moving company money and using my access information. Your mother knows part of the truth, but she believes protecting Claire protects the family. Please remember that silence does not protect a child or a marriage. It only protects the person causing the harm.Whatever happens, do not allow Millie to grow up believing that love requires her to accept fear.NoraDaniel sat at the desk with the letter in both hands.Millie climbed onto his lap.“Is that Mommy’s writing?”“Yes.”“Is she angry?”Daniel read the final line again.“No. She was trying to help us.”Rebecca opened her briefcase.Thomas’s new will was inside, along with the results of his private financial investigation. The documents proved Nora had not taken the money. They also established a trust for Millie containing Thomas’s controlling company shares, the lake house and a significant portion of his personal estate.Daniel would serve as trustee until Millie turned twenty-five.Claire would receive nothing except a modest account that would be released only if she repaid the stolen funds.“Why wasn’t the will read after Thomas died?” Daniel asked.“Thomas instructed me to delay the trust announcement until Millie’s sixth birthday,” Rebecca said. “He feared Claire would challenge your custody or pressure you while you were grieving.”“He was right.”Rebecca nodded.“But he also gave me permission to release everything if you contacted me first.”Daniel looked at the letter.Nora had left him the truth.Millie had carried the key.And Claire’s own voice had finally opened the door.
