Chapter 7 - The Recording
The recording began with Tessa’s voice.
“I’m not signing anything.”
Victor answered.
“You will sign it because you are not capable of managing what belongs to this family.”
“It was Grandmother’s decision.”
“Your grandmother expected you to behave responsibly.”
“Marrying Daniel was responsible. Having this baby is not a business decision.”
A chair moved across the floor.
Margaret spoke next.
“Lower your voice. The staff can hear you.”
“Then open the door.”
Marcus tried to sound calm.
“Tessa, sign the temporary transfer. After the child is born, we can revisit everything.”
“You mean after Father has moved the trust assets.”
Victor’s voice became colder.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know the company is losing money.”
Silence followed.
That single sentence revealed the true source of their panic.
Tessa had discovered that Hale Development was facing enormous hidden debts. Victor had been using assets connected to the family trust to secure loans. Once Tessa gained independent control of her inheritance, several financial arrangements could collapse.
On the recording, Tessa demanded to leave.
There were footsteps, raised voices, and the sound of a struggle near the door. The audio did not capture every movement, but it captured Victor ordering Marcus to stop her.
Then came a crash.
Margaret gasped.
Marcus said, “She needs a hospital.”
Victor’s reply was immediate.
“Not yet. Get the papers.”
The recording continued for another eleven minutes.
During that time, Tessa repeatedly asked for help while her family discussed the trust transfer.
Eventually, Samuel entered and refused Victor’s order to move Tessa to a private vehicle. He called an ambulance from his personal phone.
Victor threatened to ruin him.
Samuel called anyway.
Daniel listened to the recording once.
Then he walked into an empty hospital stairwell and stood there until he could breathe again.
Ortiz followed but did not speak.
After several minutes, Daniel said, “He heard her asking for help.”
“Yes.”
“And he kept talking about money.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I promised her I wouldn’t go after him.”
“You’re keeping that promise.”
“It doesn’t feel like it.”
Ortiz looked through the stairwell window toward the flashing city lights.
“Revenge is about making someone suffer because you are hurting. Justice is about preventing them from doing it again.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
