Chapter 6 - The Missing Recording
Elena Park returned for the night shift carrying information she had not shared before.
She closed the ICU room door and spoke quietly.
“When Mrs. Reeves arrived, she had a small voice recorder clipped inside her coat.”
Tessa frowned.
“I don’t own a recorder.”
“It may not have been yours.”
Elena explained that while preparing Tessa for examination, a nursing assistant had found the device and placed it in a property bag.
When Elena checked the hospital inventory later, the device was missing.
Daniel immediately contacted Ortiz.
The property room records showed that someone had collected the bag shortly after midnight using authorization from a senior hospital administrator.
That administrator had served for six years on the Hale Foundation’s medical committee.
When questioned, he claimed the authorization was an error.
Ortiz obtained a search order for his office.
The recorder was not there.
But the hospital’s internal access logs showed that the property bag had been taken to an executive conference room before disappearing.
A camera faced the conference room entrance.
The video showed Marcus Hale arriving shortly before the bag was removed.
Marcus claimed he had been visiting his sister.
The footage showed he never went near the ICU.
Ortiz questioned the nursing assistant who had found the recorder. The young woman remembered something important: a small label on the back of the device.
HB-17.
Tessa recognized it.
“Hale Building security equipment uses HB numbers.”
The recorder had likely belonged to a member of the Hale estate’s security staff.
Why had it been attached to Tessa’s coat?
Evelyn Brooks provided the answer.
When she found Tessa, a man named Samuel Grant had been kneeling beside her. Samuel was a longtime security guard at the estate.
“He kept saying he was sorry,” Evelyn recalled. “Then a car came around the corner, and he ran.”
Ortiz found Samuel at a motel two counties away.
He was terrified.
Victor had ordered him to erase the estate recordings after Tessa was taken to the hospital. Samuel obeyed at first. Then he heard Victor and Marcus discussing the story they would tell police.
Samuel copied the study audio onto a portable recorder.
He drove to the hospital, intending to give it to Tessa. When he saw members of the Hale family arriving, he clipped it inside her coat instead.
Marcus had discovered it.
But Samuel had made another copy.

“I spent twenty-three years protecting that family,” he said. “I should have protected her.”
