Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Promise

Daniel returned to Tessa’s room and found her awake.

She looked smaller beneath the hospital blanket, but her eyes were clearer.

“Did they believe me?” she asked.

“Investigator Ortiz does.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“They need more evidence.”

Tessa turned away.

“My father always says the same thing. Evidence belongs to whoever controls it.”

Daniel took her hand carefully.

“Not this time.”

“You don’t know him.”

“I know men like him.”

Tessa looked back at him.

Daniel had served under commanders who inspired loyalty and others who mistook authority for immunity. The military had taught him that discipline was not silence. It was the ability to act with purpose when anger demanded chaos.

“I want to go to that house,” Daniel said. “I want to make him look at what he did.”

“Please don’t.”

“I won’t.”

Tessa searched his face.

“I mean it.”

“So do I.”

He lifted her hand and pressed it gently to his forehead.

“I will not give him the scene he wants. I will not threaten him. I will not touch him. I will not let him turn this into a story about an unstable soldier.”

Tears filled Tessa’s eyes.

“What will you do?”

“I’ll stand beside you while the truth does the damage.”

Later that afternoon, Marcus called Daniel.

Daniel placed the phone on speaker while Investigator Ortiz listened.

“You need to convince Tessa not to make false accusations,” Marcus said.

“She told the truth.”

“You weren’t there.”

“Neither was the story you gave the police.”

Marcus was silent.

Then his tone softened.

“We can solve this privately. Tessa’s medical expenses will be covered. My father is prepared to provide both of you with a home and a generous financial arrangement.”

“In exchange for what?”

“Peace.”

Daniel looked at Ortiz.

“What does peace require?”

“Tessa signs a statement saying she became emotional and fell. You both agree not to discuss private family matters.”

Daniel waited several seconds.

“Send the proposal in writing.”

Marcus ended the call.

Ortiz almost smiled.

“He won’t.”

But Marcus did.

Twenty minutes later, an email arrived from a Hale attorney outlining the terms.

It did not prove the assault.

But it proved that the family was trying to purchase Tessa’s silence.
