Chapter 12 - The Man Who Stayed Silent)

Martin spent the night in the hospital.
Dehydration.
A fractured wrist.
Bruising.
Nothing life threatening.
By morning he was able to speak with detectives.
Grant refused to leave the hospital.
Claire stayed at Mercer House with Noah and David's security team.
Vanessa had been arrested for attempted murder, reckless endangerment, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and several financial crimes.
Julian remained missing.
Claire should have felt safe.
She did not.
At noon Grant called.
"Martin is talking."
Claire sat down.
"What did he see?"
"He didn't see the crash."
Claire's heart sank.
"But he saw Vanessa in the garage."
Grant's voice sounded distant.
"The night before Evelyn died, Martin found Vanessa beside Evelyn's car."
"Doing what?"
"She said she had dropped an earring."
Claire closed her eyes.
Grant continued.
"Martin believed her."
"Why didn't he tell police?"
"He did."
Claire opened her eyes.
"What?"
"The original detective noted it as irrelevant because Vanessa was Evelyn's friend and often visited the house."
Claire felt anger rise.
"That's it?"
"No."
Grant inhaled.
"Three days after the funeral, Julian paid Martin forty thousand dollars."
Claire stood.
"For what?"
"Martin had gambling debts. Julian called it a loan."
Claire understood.
"He bought his silence."
"Martin convinced himself it had nothing to do with Evelyn."
"Until now."
"Yes."
Grant was silent.
Then he said, "There's more."
Claire waited.
"Martin stole a copy of the garage camera archive before the system was replaced."
"Why?"
"Insurance. He was afraid Julian would eventually blame him."
"Where is it?"
"He gave it to his sister."
Claire felt hope for the first time.
"Does she still have it?"
"Detectives are retrieving it."
Two hours later the footage arrived.
The image was grainy.
The date matched the night before Evelyn's death.
Vanessa entered the garage at 11:43 p.m.
She remained near Evelyn's car for eleven minutes.
Julian entered at 11:52.
They left together.
It did not show exactly what they did.
But it destroyed Vanessa's claim that she had not been near Evelyn's vehicle.
Police reopened the investigation into Evelyn's death.
Claire's own case changed too.
The stroller camera footage was released through Grant's attorney.
Not to tabloids.
To police and prosecutors.
But the story leaked anyway.
Within forty eight hours, the same strangers who had called Claire a criminal were calling her a hero.
Claire hated both versions.
She did not feel heroic.
She had been terrified.
She had simply moved.
Grant returned home after midnight.
Claire found him in the nursery.
Noah slept against his chest.
Grant did not look up.
"They're going to exhume the car records."
Claire leaned against the door.
"What does that mean?"
"The wreckage was destroyed, but parts of the brake assembly were retained by the insurer."
"Can they prove tampering?"
"Maybe."
Claire watched Noah breathing.
"How are you?"
Grant laughed quietly.
"I don't know."
Claire walked closer.
Grant looked at her.
"I keep thinking about every dinner Vanessa ate at this table."
Claire said nothing.
"Every time she held Noah."
His voice cracked.
"I kissed her."
Claire understood the disgust behind the words.
"You didn't know who she was."
"I knew Evelyn stopped trusting her."
"You didn't understand why."
"I should have asked."
"Yes."
Grant looked surprised.
Claire continued.
"You should have asked. You should have listened more carefully. You should have noticed."
His eyes lowered.
"But failing to understand a warning doesn't make you responsible for someone else's crime."
Grant looked at her for a long time.
"How do you do that?"
"What?"
"Tell the truth without making it cruel."
Claire smiled faintly.
"Practice."
Noah moved in Grant's arms.
Claire touched the baby's hand.
His fingers closed around hers.
Grant watched.
"Claire."
"Yes?"
"I owe you more than I can repay."
"No."
"You saved him."
"I did my job."
"You jumped into a pool fully dressed."
"That was not in the job description."
Grant laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh Claire had heard from him in months.
Then David entered the nursery.
The laughter stopped.
"We have a problem."
Grant stood.
"What?"
"Julian contacted Claire."
Claire frowned.
"No, he didn't."
David held up a phone.
"Not your current number."
He placed it on the dresser.
It was Claire's old phone.
The one that had disappeared from her room six months earlier.
A new voicemail waited.
David pressed play.
Julian's voice filled the nursery.
"Claire, if you want the truth about Evelyn, come alone."
Grant's face hardened.
May you like
The message continued.
"And if Grant Mercer comes with you, Martin's sister won't live long enough to deliver the second copy."
