THE NIGHT THE LIE DROWNED / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Baby in the Water)

The engagement dinner began at seven.

Twenty four guests attended.

Vanessa wore dark green.

Claire noticed that immediately.

The same color as the fabric caught beneath the damaged stroller months earlier.

The coincidence felt almost insulting.

Grant spent most of the evening inside the dining room.

That was deliberate.

David and two security officers remained hidden nearby.

Noah's stroller had been fitted with a concealed camera beneath the handle.

The original plan was simple.

Noah would not be in it.

A weighted blanket would create the shape of a sleeping baby.

Claire would remain close enough to witness Vanessa's actions.

Police waited less than five minutes away.

Everything changed at 9:06.

A smoke alarm activated in the kitchen.

Guests moved toward the front of the house.

One security officer went to investigate.

Then the second.

David received a call reporting someone at the main gate.

Claire immediately knew.

Diversion.

She ran toward the patio.

The stroller was gone.

So was Noah.

Claire's lungs stopped working.

She searched the family room.

Empty.

Then she saw Vanessa through the rear glass doors.

Vanessa was pushing the stroller toward the pool.

Noah was inside.

"Vanessa."

Claire dropped the plates she was carrying.

China shattered.

Vanessa turned.

For one second, neither woman moved.

Then Vanessa lifted Noah from the stroller.

Claire ran.

Vanessa looked directly at her.

And threw the baby into the pool.

The sound Claire made did not feel human.

She jumped.

Cold water swallowed her.

The lights from the mansion fractured across the surface above.

Claire saw a small white shape sinking.

She kicked downward.

Her fingers caught Noah's clothing.

She pulled him against her.

He was moving.

Crying underwater.

Claire pushed upward.

They broke the surface.

Noah screamed.

Claire nearly sobbed from relief.

She carried him to the edge.

Grant appeared.

He pulled Noah from Claire's arms.

Claire climbed out.

She collapsed onto her knees.

Everything happened exactly as Vanessa had planned after that.

Almost.

Vanessa grabbed a dirty towel.

She threw it into Claire's face.

Then she shouted.

"She pushed your son into the pool."

Claire stared.

"She's lying."

"Call the police. Throw the maid out."

Grant said nothing.

Vanessa believed she had won.

She did not know Claire had seen the concealed camera beneath the stroller.

She did not know Grant had installed a second independent recording unit after Julian escaped.

She did not know the device transmitted directly to Grant's phone.

Grant looked at the stroller handle.

The transmission indicator was still flashing.

His face turned cold.

He reached inside his coat.

The handcuffs he carried belonged to David.

David had given them to him only an hour earlier because the police expected Julian might return.

Grant closed one cuff around Vanessa's wrist.

She stared.

"Have you lost your mind?"

He secured her to the railing.

"You wanted the police."

Vanessa pulled against the steel.

"Grant."

"You're getting them."

Claire stood shaking.

Noah cried against Grant's shoulder.

Vanessa looked between them.

"You don't understand."

Grant's voice was low.

"I understand enough."

"You weren't here."

Grant looked at the stroller.

"You should have checked it."

Vanessa saw the camera.

Her face collapsed.

Then her phone rang.

Julian Cross.

Grant caught the phone when Vanessa tried to kick it into the pool.

A message appeared.

DID SHE TAKE THE FALL?

Grant read it.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Behind them, the mansion door slammed.

David ran onto the patio.

"Julian's on the property."

Grant handed Noah to Claire.

"Take him inside."

Claire held the baby tightly.

David and security moved toward the side garden.

Police sirens approached.

Vanessa stopped fighting the cuffs.

She looked at Claire.

"This is your fault."

Claire stared at her.

"No."

For the first time in eleven months, Claire felt no fear.

"This is yours."

Police entered through the terrace.

Vanessa began crying.

The transformation was immediate.

"Grant is insane. He attacked me. The maid is obsessed with the baby."

An officer removed Grant's handcuffs and placed Vanessa in official restraints.

Another officer took Grant's phone.

The stroller recording played.

Vanessa's voice.

Her hands.

Noah falling.

Claire jumping.

Everything.

Vanessa stopped crying.

Then a shout came from the garden.

An officer ran back.

"We found someone."

Claire's heart accelerated.

"Julian?"

The officer shook his head.

"No."

David appeared behind him.

His face was pale.

"It's Martin Hale."

The missing former house manager.

He was alive.

And he had been locked inside the old pool equipment building for three days.

When Martin saw Vanessa being led away, he whispered something that made Grant go completely still.

"I know what happened to Evelyn."
