Chapter 15 - The Door Robert Left Locked

Charles Whitmore never reached the airport.
His car was discovered beneath an overpass twelve miles from Westbridge.
Empty.
No blood.
No signs of struggle.
His phone had been smashed.
Adrian Vale disappeared again.
Rachel Mercer remained in federal custody.
Daniel Carter accepted a preliminary cooperation agreement after prosecutors made it clear that silence would not save him.
Vanessa Reed entered protective custody in exchange for testimony.
Dr. Monica Hale was arrested at a bus terminal two states away.
For the first time, the network surrounding Adrian Vale began to crack.
And Lily survived.
Three weeks after the night her father stole her medication, Lily walked out of the pediatric specialty center holding Emily's hand.
She was thinner.
Tired.
Still facing months of treatment.
But alive.
Outside, reporters waited behind barriers.
Emily ignored them.
Lily looked at the crowd.
"Are they here because of Dad?"
Emily squeezed her hand.
"Some of them."
"Is Dad going to jail?"
Emily looked down at her daughter.
Daniel had been denied bail.
His pharmacy license was suspended pending permanent revocation proceedings.
Federal prosecutors had charged him with multiple offenses, and state prosecutors were preparing additional counts involving Lily.
Emily had filed for divorce.
She had also obtained sole temporary custody.
There would be no quiet return to normal.
But there would be a return to something.
"Your dad made choices," Emily said. "Now other people are deciding the consequences."
Lily thought about that.
"Did he know the medicine was mine?"
Emily stopped walking.
Children deserved truth.
But they did not deserve every wound at once.
"Yes."
Lily looked down.
For several seconds she said nothing.
Then she whispered, "Okay."
Emily's heart broke at the smallness of that word.
She crouched.
"You never have to protect him."
Lily's eyes filled.
"Was it because I was bad?"
Emily pulled her into her arms.
"No."
She held her tightly.
"Never."
That evening they returned to Helen's house rather than the home Emily had shared with Daniel.
Federal officers had checked every room.
New security cameras covered the property.
Lily fell asleep before eight.
Emily remained downstairs with Helen and Michael Bennett.
Michael had been cooperating with investigators.
Emily had not forgiven him.
Maybe she never would.
But forgiveness and usefulness were not the same thing.
He had information.
She needed it.
Grant arrived at 9:17 p.m. carrying a small cardboard box.
"We recovered this from a safe-deposit box registered under your father's name."
Emily looked at it.
"When?"
"This afternoon."
"How did you find it?"
"Michael gave us a list of banks Robert used."
Michael looked uncomfortable.
Emily ignored him.
Grant placed the box on the table.
"Your father opened the box two months before his death."
Emily lifted the lid.
Inside were photographs.
Old cassette tapes.
A small notebook.
Three keys.
And a letter addressed to Emily.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Emily,
If you are reading this, then I failed to keep the past buried.
I need you to understand something before you decide what kind of man I was.
I helped Samuel Vale.
I believed him at first.
By the time I understood what he was doing to the children, you were already involved.
I spent the rest of my life trying to destroy what I helped build.
If Adrian comes back, he will come for the research.
If the research is gone, he will come for you.
If he cannot get you, he will wait for your child.
Emily stopped reading.
Helen began crying.
Grant stood silently.
Emily continued.
There is one place Adrian does not know about.
At least I pray he does not.
Do not go there unless Lily is already in danger.
If you are reading this, she probably is.
The first key opens the property gate.
The second opens the cellar.
The third opens a steel door.
Do not open that door alone.
Emily lowered the letter.
Grant looked at the three keys.
"Did he include an address?"
Emily turned the page.
Coordinates.
Not an address.
Grant entered them into his phone.
A map appeared.
Rural land.
Approximately seventy miles north.
Michael looked over his shoulder.
His face changed.
"No."
Emily noticed.
"You know it."
Michael stepped backward.
"No."
"What is there?"
"Robert told me he destroyed it."
"Destroyed what?"
Michael stared at the coordinates.
"Vale's original laboratory."
The room went silent.
Emily looked at Grant.
"When do we go?"
"Not tonight."
"Why?"
"Because your father specifically said not to go alone, and I want a full team."
Emily wanted to argue.
Then footsteps sounded on the staircase.
Lily stood halfway down.
Barefoot.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
"Mom?"
Emily immediately went to her.
"What's wrong?"
"I couldn't sleep."
Emily carried her back upstairs.
"Bad dream?"
Lily nodded against her shoulder.
"What happened?"
"The silver-haired man was there again."
Emily stopped on the stairs.
"It was only a dream."
Lily lifted her head.
"No."
"What do you mean?"
"He wasn't in the dream."
Emily stared at her.
Lily reached into the pocket of her pajamas.
"I found this under my pillow."
She held out a folded piece of paper.
Emily's blood turned cold.
Her bedroom had been searched.
The house had been secured.
Federal officers were outside.
No stranger should have been able to enter.
Emily unfolded the paper.
A photograph slid into her hand.
It showed Lily asleep in the very bed they were standing beside.
Taken that evening.
Emily nearly dropped it.
On the back, written in black ink, were six words.
ROBERT LIED ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE.
Emily's breathing stopped.
Grant came up the stairs.
He took one look at the photograph and shouted toward the agents outside.
"Lock down the house!"
Doors slammed.
Radios exploded with voices.
Officers ran through the halls.
Emily held Lily against her chest.
Then she noticed something beneath the words.
Tiny numbers.
A date.
Tomorrow.
And a time.
6:40 a.m.
The exact same time listed in the failed transfer protocol.
But underneath it was a new location.
The coordinates matched Robert's hidden laboratory.
Michael Bennett stared at the message.
His face went completely white.
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
Michael whispered something she almost couldn't hear.
"That's impossible."
"What is?"
His eyes moved from Lily to Emily.
Then back to the photograph.
"Robert didn't hide that laboratory from Adrian."
Emily felt the world tighten around her again.
"Then who did he hide it from?"
Michael slowly raised his eyes.
"Samuel."
Emily stared.
"Samuel Vale is dead."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
A loud crash erupted downstairs.
One of the federal agents shouted.
"Movement at the rear window!"
Grant drew his weapon and ran.
Helen screamed.
Emily grabbed Lily and moved toward the locked bedroom.
Then every light in the house went out.
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
A phone rang downstairs.
Not Emily's.
Not Grant's.
An old landline Helen had not used in years.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Michael stood frozen at the top of the stairs.
The ringing stopped.
The answering machine clicked on automatically.
Static filled the dark house.
Then an elderly man's voice spoke.
Calm.
Weak.
Familiar to Michael.
"Emily."
Michael gripped the railing.
Emily felt Lily trembling in her arms.
The voice continued.
"If Robert's daughter is hearing this, then Adrian has already made his move."
Emily stepped toward the stairs.
"Who is that?"
Michael did not answer.
The recording continued.
"Do not trust the son."
A long hiss of static.
"And do not trust the doctor standing beside you."
Emily slowly turned toward Michael Bennett.
His face drained of color.
The voice on the answering machine finished with one final sentence.
"Bring L-8 to the laboratory, and I will tell her mother why Lily Carter was born."
The line disconnected.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Grant's voice thundered from downstairs.
"Emily! Stay where you are!"
A gunshot exploded outside.
Lily screamed.
Emily pulled her close.
Through the bedroom window, headlights suddenly appeared beyond the backyard fence.
A black vehicle sat beneath the trees.
Its driver's door opened.
A tall figure stepped out.
Not Adrian.
Older.
Much older.
Michael stared through the glass.
His knees nearly gave way.
"No."
Emily looked at him.
"Who is it?"
Michael's lips barely moved.
"Samuel Vale."
The old man outside slowly lifted his face toward Lily's bedroom window.
May you like
And smiled.
CUT TO BLACK.
