Chapter 12 - The Nurse Who Never Existed

Westbridge locked down Lily's care team.
Every staff member who had entered her room during the previous week was identified.
Badge logs were reviewed.
Video footage was pulled.
Medication access was traced.
At first, nothing appeared wrong.
Then an ICU nurse noticed something strange.
Three nights before Lily's collapse, a woman wearing blue scrubs entered the room at 2:13 a.m.
She remained inside for four minutes.
She checked the IV pump.
Adjusted tubing.
Then left.
Her face was partially obscured by a surgical mask.
The electronic badge log identified her as Rebecca Sloan.
There was no Rebecca Sloan employed at Westbridge.
The badge belonged to a nurse who had resigned eleven months earlier.
Security footage followed the woman.
She left through a service stairwell.
Changed clothes in a maintenance corridor.
Then walked into the parking garage.
A black SUV waited.
The same model Adrian Vale had used six months earlier.
Emily watched the footage with Grant.
"Find her."
"We're running facial recognition."
"Find her."
"I understand."
"No. You don't."
Emily pointed toward Lily's room.
"My daughter was poisoned in an ICU."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"You're right."
By afternoon, they had a name.
Rachel Mercer.
Forty-two.
Former clinical research coordinator.
Worked for Vale Biomedical eleven years earlier.
No current medical license.
No known permanent address.
Her last documented residence was in Ohio.
But a traffic camera had photographed her car near Westbridge two days before Lily was admitted.
Emily stared at the image.
"This was planned."
Grant nodded.
"Yes."
"They knew Lily would end up here."
"Or they intended her to."
Emily felt sick.
Dr. Bennett entered with another development.
"Lily's original pediatrician retired last year."
Emily frowned.
"Dr. Parker."
"Yes."
"Why does that matter?"
"Because Daniel insisted on transferring Lily's records to Westbridge Pediatrics immediately afterward."
Emily remembered.
Daniel had handled everything.
He said keeping care inside the same medical network was easier.
Bennett continued.
"Her new pediatrician, Dr. Monica Hale, joined Westbridge six months before that."
Emily understood.
"Is she connected to Vale?"
"We don't know."
Grant was already calling someone.
Dr. Hale's office was searched that evening.
She was gone.
Her apartment was empty.
Her bank accounts had been closed three days earlier.
Inside her office, investigators found one thing she had failed to destroy.
A locked flash drive taped beneath a drawer.
It contained encrypted files.
The federal cyber unit opened one folder.
LILY CARTER.
Inside were years of laboratory results.
Photographs.
Growth measurements.
Immune markers.
School attendance.
Hospital visits.
Family routines.
And a document titled Transition Protocol.
The date on it was tomorrow.
Emily's hands went cold.
"What happens tomorrow?"
Grant scrolled.
Most of the file was encrypted.
One visible line remained.
TRANSFER WINDOW: 06:40–07:10.
Emily looked at the clock.
Tomorrow morning Lily was scheduled to leave Westbridge for the pediatric specialty center.
At 7:00 a.m.
Emily turned toward Grant.
"They weren't waiting for her here."
May you like
Grant understood.
"They were waiting for the transfer."
