Chapter 14 - What Dr. Bennett Hid

Dr. Michael Bennett asked everyone except Emily and Grant to leave.
Emily refused to sit.
"You knew my father."
Michael looked older than he had the day before.
"Yes."
"You knew Samuel Vale."
"Yes."
"You knew what happened to me."
His silence lasted too long.
Emily stepped closer.
"Say it."
"I was a medical student."
"Say it."
"I knew."
Emily slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Grant did not intervene.
Michael took the blow without moving.
Emily's eyes filled.
"You stood beside my daughter's bed for four days."
"I know."
"You let me trust you."
"I was trying to protect her."
"You don't get to use that word."
Michael looked toward the closed ICU door.
"In 1991, Samuel Vale recruited students and residents to assist with what he claimed was compassionate treatment research."
"On children."
"Yes."
"Illegal research."
"We didn't know everything."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"That's Daniel's excuse too."
Michael absorbed it.
"He told us the children had conditions conventional medicine couldn't treat."
"And me?"
"You were different."
"How?"
"You weren't terminally ill."
"Then why was I there?"
"Your father brought you after you developed a rare inflammatory syndrome."
Emily shook her head.
"He let Vale experiment on me."
"At first, Robert believed he was saving you."
"And later?"
Michael closed his eyes.
"Later he discovered children were being intentionally triggered into immune crises so Vale could study response."
Emily's face went blank.
The pattern.
Lily.
It had happened before.
"Did Vale make me sick?"
"Once."
Emily could barely breathe.
"Once?"
"The third trial."
"What happened?"
"You nearly died."
Emily gripped the chair.
"What did my father do?"
"He attacked Vale."
Helen had remembered blood on Robert's coat.
Emily whispered, "He killed him?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Robert forced him to stop the infusion. He took you home. Then he started collecting records."
"For police?"
"For anyone who would listen."
"What happened?"
"Vale had people protecting him."
"Hospital administrators?"
"Some. Investors. Private donors. A pharmaceutical executive."
"Names."
"Many are dead."
"Names."
Michael looked at Grant.
Then back at Emily.
"One is still alive."
"Who?"
"Charles Whitmore."
Emily froze.
The pharmacy director.
The man who told her Daniel had stolen Lily's medicine.
"He knew?"
Michael nodded.
"He was a junior research pharmacist in 1991."
Grant immediately reached for his phone.
Michael continued quickly.
"Robert discovered Whitmore had been preparing unauthorized compounds."
Emily stared.
"And he became pharmacy director?"
"Years later."
"Why didn't you expose him?"
"We tried."
"We?"
"Your father and me."
"What happened?"
"Records disappeared. Witnesses changed statements. Samuel Vale vanished. Adrian left the state. The investigation collapsed."
"And my father?"
"He spent the rest of his life watching them."
Emily thought of Robert.
Quiet.
Protective.
Always checking windows twice.
Always suspicious of doctors.
He had never explained why.
Michael continued.
"Seven years ago, Robert called me."
"The week he died?"
Michael nodded.
"He said Adrian was back."
Emily's pulse quickened.
"What else?"
"He said Adrian wanted you."
"Me?"
"Your bloodline."
Emily looked toward Lily.
Michael's voice broke.
"Robert said if anything happened to him, I had to watch your family."
Emily stared at him.
"You knew Daniel was involved?"
"No. Not until the missing medication."
"Then you failed."
Michael lowered his head.
"Yes."
Grant was already speaking into his phone.
He ended the call.
"Whitmore's office is empty."
Emily turned.
"Find him."
Grant's phone rang again immediately.
He answered.
Listened.
"Where?"
His face tightened.
"Seal the airport."
Emily stepped closer.
"What's happening?"
Grant looked at her.
"Whitmore was seen leaving Westbridge forty minutes ago."
"With who?"
May you like
Grant stared toward the ICU room containing Lily.
"Adrian Vale."
