Chapter 12 - The Man Who Bought Tomorrow
Dr. Wynn began talking after the sniper attack.
He demanded federal protection and immunity from the most serious charges. Prosecutors promised only to consider cooperation. It was enough.
Wynn described Thomas Mercer not as victim or villain, but as a man who became both while trying to defeat Eleanor's network.
After the hospital experiment, Thomas survived the parking-garage attack and disappeared under federal witness protection. He gathered evidence on illegal adoptions and medical fraud, but the investigation collapsed when key witnesses vanished. Thomas became convinced official systems could not protect his sons.
He created the Mercer Family Preservation Trust as leverage. Then he spent years watching Eleanor, Wynn, and Hale through intermediaries.
"He paid for Liam?" David asked.
Wynn looked at the table. "He financed the fertility clinic where Maya received treatment."
Maya had undergone hormone therapy after two miscarriages. The clinic offered a grant covering most expenses. She and David believed it came from a charitable foundation.
The foundation belonged to Thomas.
"Why?" Maya asked.
"He wanted a grandchild," Wynn said. "A verified heir who could activate the trust and force the family into the open."
David's anger became physical. "He used our losses."
"He believed he was helping."
"Without consent."
Wynn nodded. "Consent was never important to anyone in this group."
That sentence defined the entire history.
Thomas had opposed Eleanor's methods, but he had eventually adopted the same logic: people became pieces in a plan justified by protection. He monitored David's marriage, funded treatment, and waited for Liam's birth to trigger financial traps around Eleanor.
The original plan may have been to expose Haven through the guardianship attempt. Thomas expected authorities to intervene before Maya suffered serious harm.
But someone altered the timing.
Hale accelerated David's Singapore trip. Eleanor removed food and medication. Daniel manipulated communications. Wynn, fearing exposure, prepared the insurance policy. Thomas's controlled sting became an attempted killing.
"Where is Thomas now?" Brooks asked.
Wynn glanced toward the mirrored glass. "I don't know. He communicates through a man called Shepherd."
The sniper likely worked for Shepherd, either to silence Wynn or prevent Daniel from being taken alive.
Martin Hale remained missing. Financial records showed he transferred millions from Haven accounts hours before the Miami arrests. Investigators believed he had joined Thomas or planned to escape alone.
Daniel was hospitalized under armed guard. He refused to cooperate unless allowed to speak with David.
David agreed only after Maya said, "You may never get another chance to hear what he remembers without your mother's version in the room."
Daniel lay cuffed to the bed, shoulder bandaged. Without the gray suit and threats, he looked less like David and more like a man exhausted by a lifetime of rehearsing someone else.
"Did you enter Maya's hospital room?" David asked.
"Yes."
"Did you touch Liam?"
"I held him. I took blood from the cord sample. Wynn wanted confirmation."
"Did you hurt Maya?"
Daniel looked away. "Not then."
"Why did you help Eleanor?"
"She found me after Father disappeared. She said you had taken my home. She showed me pictures of you getting birthdays, school awards, a wedding. She said I could have all of it if I proved I was stronger."
"She lied to both of us."
"You got the better lie."
David could not deny the inequality. Whatever his childhood wounds, Daniel had lived in institutions, temporary homes, and secret facilities. Recognition of that suffering did not excuse what he did to Maya, but it made the story more honest.
"You will answer for hurting my family," David said. "But I will not help her erase you again. Your name matters. Your records matter. What happened to you matters."
Daniel studied him suspiciously.
Then he whispered, "Father came to the farmhouse two months ago."
David leaned closer.
"What did he want?"
"Liam."
"Why?"
"He said the trust was never money. The money only funds something called the Continuity House."
Daniel described a hidden facility where children from the old network had been raised under replacement identities. Thomas believed some were still alive, trained to enter families, companies, and government offices.
Before David could ask more, Daniel's heart monitor spiked.
A nurse entered carrying medication. David noticed the nurse's badge photo did not match her face.
He shouted.
She dropped the syringe and ran. Officers caught her in the corridor. The syringe contained enough potassium to stop Daniel's heart.
On the floor beside it lay a white card stamped with a shepherd's staff.

Wynn also admitted that he had kept records on mothers who resisted the network. Maya's file included the word noncompliant beside notes praising her attachment to Liam and her habit of verifying medical instructions. Traits that should have marked her as a careful parent were treated as operational risks. David read the page and understood why Eleanor worked so hard to make Maya doubt herself. The conspiracy could not control a woman who trusted her own observations. Starvation was only one weapon; shame had been the more important one.
