Chapter 10 - Two Sons, One Lie

Daniel's first shot struck the ceiling when Detective Brooks slammed into his arm.
The room exploded into motion. Officers pulled David behind the interview table. Eleanor dropped beneath the window. Daniel fired again, shattering the glass barrier, then disappeared into the smoke.
The detention center had not caught fire by accident. A maintenance contractor had disabled alarms and opened a service entrance. The contractor was later found unconscious in a van, his uniform missing.
Daniel escaped, but not before leaving a message painted on the wall of the service tunnel.
ONE SON WAS LOVED. ONE SON WAS USED.
Eleanor suffered cuts from the glass. She refused treatment until David returned to the interview room.
"He will go after Maya now," she said.
David leaned toward the broken barrier. "Then tell us how to stop him."
"Promise me the trust."
"No."
"It belongs to the family."
"Maya and Liam are my family."
For the first time, Eleanor looked wounded. Not remorseful. Rejected.
David understood that she had always translated access into love. Money, obedience, secrets, and fear were the only forms of attachment she trusted. His boundaries felt to her like betrayal because she had never seen him as separate from herself.
"You will die stubborn," he said. "And I will still not give you my wife, my son, or one dollar."
Eleanor's expression hardened.
Then she gave them an address.
It belonged to a lakeside house in upstate New York, the same house shown in the twenty-seven-year-old photograph. Wynn had used it for private treatment sessions. Daniel returned there whenever he felt threatened.
A tactical team reached the property at dusk. David remained at a command post miles away while Maya and Liam were moved to a second protected location.
The house was empty.
In the basement, agents found a childhood reconstruction: two small bedrooms, matching clothes, family photographs altered so either boy could appear beside Eleanor, and walls covered with written exercises.
MY NAME IS DAVID.
MOTHER SAVED ME.
THE OTHER BOY IS DANGEROUS.
A locked cabinet held videotapes. One showed Thomas confronting Eleanor, Wynn, and Hale.
"You cannot send one child home and erase the other," Thomas said. "They are both my sons."
Eleanor replied, "We cannot raise both. One is compliant. One is unstable."
"You made him unstable."
The recording ended with Thomas turning toward the camera and saying, "If anything happens to me, the trust protects whichever child escapes you."
Another tape revealed the choice.
David A, the boy originally raised at home, had developed a heart infection during the hospital experiment. David B, the twin raised in medical isolation, was physically healthier and had learned the home narrative more successfully. Wynn recommended returning David B to the family while declaring David A dead under a false name.
Thomas objected. Eleanor agreed.
The man who grew up as David Mercer was David B.
Daniel was David A.
David watched the tape without speaking.
He had been the replacement.
But the next recording complicated everything. It showed Thomas secretly removing David A from the hospital before the false death could be completed. He promised to protect both children and expose the experiment. Someone attacked him in the parking garage. The image cut out.
Eleanor later recovered one twin, but the tape did not show which one.
The labels A and B had been swapped repeatedly. Wristbands changed. Files contradicted one another. Even Wynn admitted on tape that certainty was lost.
The entire system had depended on identity confusion.
"There may be no way to know which child you were at birth," Brooks told David.
David looked at the wall of forced sentences.
"Then it does not matter."
It surprised him how true the words felt.
Someone had tried to reduce him to a chosen role. He would not continue their experiment by fighting for the preferred label.
Agents found a live video feed in an upstairs office. It showed Maya's new protected house.
Daniel had located her.
On-screen, a delivery van stopped at the curb. A man stepped out carrying a package.
David recognized Dr. Wynn beneath the driver's cap.
He grabbed Brooks's radio.
"Get them out now."
May you like
The feed went black.
After the detention-center attack, investigators searched Eleanor's cell and found a list of staff schedules hidden inside a legal pad. She had been mapping guard rotations for weeks. Whether she planned Daniel's entry or merely expected it, she had prepared to benefit. Brooks also found a sketch of the interview room with the words BOTH BOYS PRESENT circled twice. Eleanor claimed it was a memory exercise. David recognized the truth: even in custody, she was arranging her sons inside another test. He refused to ask who had passed.
