Chapter 11 - The House With No Safe Room

Maya heard the doorbell while feeding Liam.

The officer stationed inside checked the camera. A delivery driver stood on the porch with a pharmacy package. The label displayed Maya's name and the antibiotic she was expecting.

The officer called the pharmacy. The order was legitimate.

Still, Maya felt something wrong.

The driver's left hand rested too carefully against the box. His cap covered his face, but a strip of gray hair showed near his ear.

Dr. Wynn had gray hair.

"Don't open it," Maya said.

The officer reached for his radio.

The package exploded against the door.

It was not a large blast, but it shattered the lock and filled the entry with white chemical smoke. The officer fell coughing. Maya wrapped Liam inside her robe and ran toward the rear bedroom.

The safe room would not close. Its electronic lock flashed red.

WELCOME HOME, BROTHER appeared on the panel.

Daniel had compromised the system before they arrived.

Maya pushed a dresser against the bedroom door and opened the window. The drop to the ground was only six feet, but her incision still burned when she moved. She lowered Liam inside a laundry basket tied to a bedsheet, praying the knot would hold.

The bedroom door shook under a blow.

"Maya," Wynn called from the hall. "The baby needs medical care. You are confused."

His calm voice terrified her more than shouting would have.

She lowered the basket. Liam began to cry. The sound exposed their position.

The door cracked.

Maya climbed onto the sill. Pain tore across her abdomen. Warm blood spread beneath her bandage.

Wynn entered as she jumped.

She hit the grass on one knee, rolled, and reached for Liam. Wynn leaned from the window and grabbed the bedsheet. The basket lifted inches from the ground.

Maya seized a garden shovel and struck the wall beneath his hands. He released the sheet. She pulled Liam free and ran barefoot toward the neighboring house.

A second man stepped from behind the garage.

Daniel.

He wore David's gray suit.

For one confused second, Maya's body reacted as though her husband had arrived. Daniel saw it and smiled.

"He told you I was the monster," he said.

"You tried to kill me."

"I tried to stop Mother from giving him everything again."

"By stealing my baby?"

"Liam unlocks what belongs to me."

Maya backed away, holding the shovel between them.

Daniel's face changed when he looked at Liam. Not tenderness. Hunger.

"Give him to me."

"No."

"You cannot tell us apart."

"I can."

His smile vanished.

Maya understood then that Daniel's deepest wound was not losing a name or inheritance. It was the belief that identity could be stolen simply by performing it well enough. He needed her confusion to prove Eleanor's experiment had worked.

"David looks at Liam like a person," she said. "You look at him like a key."

Daniel lunged.

A gunshot cracked from the street. Daniel spun and fell behind the hedge. Detective Alvarez advanced with two officers. Wynn ran through the back door and was tackled near the driveway.

David arrived minutes later, jumping from Brooks's vehicle before it fully stopped. He found Maya seated on the grass, blood on her clothes again, Liam screaming safely against her chest.

He knelt but did not touch her until she nodded.

"You came," she whispered.

"Every time."

Paramedics carried her to an ambulance. Her wound had reopened but no major vessel was damaged. Liam was unharmed.

Daniel had been shot in the shoulder. Officers handcuffed him beside the hedge. As they lifted him, he looked at David.

The two men faced each other in daylight for the first time.

"She chose you," Daniel said.

David shook his head. "She did not choose either of us. She chose control."

Daniel laughed through the pain. "You still think this ends with her?"

He turned toward the ambulance where Wynn sat restrained.

"Ask the doctor who paid for Liam before he was conceived."

Wynn's face went pale.

Then a sniper's bullet struck the pavement between the officers.

Everyone dropped.

A second shot shattered the ambulance mirror.

From the wooded hill beyond the houses, a dark vehicle sped away.

Daniel began laughing again.

May you like

"Father is awake," he said.

At the hospital, Maya asked the nurse to document every bruise and reopened stitch before treatment. She hated being photographed, but she wanted no future lawyer to call the attack confusion. Alvarez stood beside her while the evidence nurse worked and reminded her she could stop at any time. That permission nearly broke Maya. Consent in small moments felt unfamiliar after weeks of violation. She continued because it was her decision, and later told David that reclaiming choice was the first time she felt stronger than Eleanor.
