Chapter 9 - Eleven Minutes Without Sophie

Grace Nolan called Emily at 4:36 p.m.
"Sophie's not in your office."
Emily stopped breathing.
"What?"
"I went to get water. Thirty seconds. I came back and she was gone."
Emily was already moving.
"Lock internal exits."
She hit her radio.
"Control, locate Sophie Carter. Eight years old. Pale-blue sweater, gray skirt, white sneakers."
Security answered immediately.
"Copy."
Emily ran toward the elevators.
Her rational mind tried to stay in command.
Children wandered.
Sophie might be in the restroom.
She might have gone looking for a snack.
But Sophie had been frightened enough by Vanessa to obey every rule for weeks.
She would not simply leave.
Emily reached the camera room.
"Last visual."
An operator pulled footage.
Sophie exited Emily's office at 4:33.
Why?
The answer appeared three seconds later.
Cynthia Whitmore stood at the far end of the corridor.
She beckoned.
Sophie hesitated.
Then Cynthia pointed toward something off camera.
Sophie followed.
Emily's stomach dropped.
"Track them."
Camera 18.
Hallway.
Camera 22.
Service elevator.
Camera 31.
Cynthia and Sophie stepped onto the ballroom level.
Then Cynthia looked directly into the camera.
The feed went black.
Emily slammed her hand against the desk.
"Which cameras are down?"
"Thirty-one through thirty-six."
"Lock every ballroom exit."
"They have executive override."
"Remove it."
"Working."
Emily grabbed her radio.
"Patrick, Cynthia has Sophie."
She ran.
Two security officers followed.
The ballroom level seemed endless.
Empty corridors.
Closed event rooms.
Storage closets.
Service passages.
Emily shouted Sophie's name.
No answer.
At 4:41, camera 34 returned.
Empty.
Camera 35.
Empty.
Camera 36.
A door moved.
Linen storage room.
Emily sprinted.
She reached the door.
Locked.
"Cynthia."
Nothing.
Emily slammed her access card against the reader.
Denied.
Executive lockout.
One officer produced a mechanical override.
Before he could use it, Emily heard something from inside.
Her daughter's voice.
"Mom."
Emily hit the door.
"Sophie."
"I'm here."
"Move away from the door."
The officer unlocked it.
Emily pulled it open.
Sophie ran directly into her arms.
She was crying.
Unhurt.
Alone.
Emily dropped to her knees and held her.
"Are you okay?"
Sophie nodded.
"Did she touch you?"
"No."
"Did she threaten you?"
Sophie swallowed.
"She said if I keep lying, you'll lose your job and we'll lose our apartment."
Emily closed her eyes.
The fear became anger.
"Anything else?"
"She said nobody believes kids."
One officer searched the room.
"Cynthia isn't here."
There was a second service door.
Unlocked from the inside.
She had left before Emily arrived.
Emily carried Sophie upstairs.
Patrick was waiting.
Alexander arrived twelve minutes later.
When he saw Sophie, something changed in him.
Until that point, the investigation had been about his marriage, his money, and an imaginary child.
Now an actual child had been targeted.
He crouched in front of Sophie.
"I'm sorry."
Sophie looked at him.
"For what?"
"For not believing you immediately."
She considered this.
Then she said, "My mom believed me."
Alexander glanced at Emily.
"I know."
Sophie reached into her pocket.
"I recorded Cynthia."
Emily stared.
"What?"
Sophie pulled out a small digital voice recorder.
It was a cheap device Emily had given her months earlier to practice spelling words.
"I turned it on because you said if someone scares me, remember everything."
Emily had meant observe.
Not conduct surveillance.
But she took the recorder.
The audio began with footsteps.
Cynthia's voice.
Your mother sent me.
Sophie.
No, she didn't.
Cynthia.
Fine. Then let's stop pretending.
A door closed.
Cynthia again.
You saw something that wasn't your business.
Sophie.
You mean Vanessa's pillow.
Silence.
Then Cynthia.
If you say that again at the gala, your mother will be fired before you finish the sentence.
Sophie.
Why?
Cynthia.
Because nobody believes children when adults give them a better story.
Then the most important part.
Sophie.
What happens to the baby?
Cynthia laughed.
There is no baby.
Emily froze the recording.
Alexander looked away.
Sophie stared at him.
"I'm sorry."
He swallowed.
"You don't need to apologize."
Emily played the rest.
Cynthia's voice returned.
After Friday, it disappears. Vanessa cries. Alexander gets sympathy. Everyone moves on.
Sophie.
And the money?
A pause.
Cynthia.
You really are your mother's daughter.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Alexander stood.
His face was completely calm.
"Patrick."
"Yes?"
"Preserve every second."
"Already copying it."
Alexander looked at Emily.
"No more waiting."
Emily shook her head.
"We're still missing the doctor."
"I don't care."
"I do."
She stepped closer.
"Cynthia just admitted the fake pregnancy. If you confront them now, they'll say she was frightening Sophie with a joke. We need the financial records and Pierce."
Alexander looked ready to argue.
Emily continued.
"Give me five days."
"The gala is in nine."
"Five."
"And Sophie?"
"She's not coming back here until gala night."
Sophie protested.
"Mom."
"No."
Emily looked at Alexander.
"If they go near my daughter again, the investigation is over. I take everything we have outside the hotel."
Alexander nodded.
"Agreed."
That evening, Sophie slept beside Emily.
At 2:00 a.m., Emily was still awake.
She replayed Cynthia's sentence in her head.
Nobody believes children when adults give them a better story.
Maybe Cynthia had relied on that her entire life.
She had mistaken power for credibility.
May you like
She had mistaken wealth for truth.
And most dangerously, she had mistaken Sophie Carter for a child who could be frightened into silence.
