THE NIGHT THE HEIR COLLAPSED / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Pillow on the Floor

The fake belly struck the ballroom floor at 9:15 p.m.

Everything afterward happened faster than the scandal could spread.

Alexander returned the vase to the table.

Emily lifted Sophie into her arms.

Patrick ordered ballroom doors closed, not to trap guests, but to prevent a stampede of reporters into restricted areas.

Vanessa stood beneath the chandeliers with the torn side of her gown clutched in both hands.

Cynthia's face dripped champagne.

She pointed at Sophie.

"That child attacked a pregnant woman."

Nobody responded.

Because the pregnancy cushion was lying between them.

Alexander looked at Cynthia.

"Stop."

"She stabbed Vanessa."

"She punctured foam."

Cynthia turned toward her sister.

"Say something."

Vanessa did not.

Emily's phone vibrated again.

The restored service-corridor video had arrived.

Cynthia and Dr. Pierce discussing the post-gala plan.

After the gala, we move the money.

Two days later, she loses the baby.

By then it won't matter.

Alexander listened.

The billionaire's expression transformed from shock into certainty.

Cynthia stared at Vanessa.

"You talked."

Vanessa whispered, "It's over."

"No."

Cynthia grabbed her arm.

"We can still fix this."

Alexander stepped between them.

"Don't touch her."

Cynthia laughed.

"You're protecting her now?"

"I'm stopping you from controlling another person."

Cynthia's confidence finally cracked.

"You think she invented this?"

Alexander said nothing.

Cynthia pointed at Vanessa.

"She called me crying because you wanted a divorce. She asked me to help."

Vanessa looked horrified.

"Shut up."

"You started it."

"You made it worse."

"I made it possible."

The ballroom had become perfectly still.

Hundreds of people were witnessing the sisters destroy each other's story.

Emily carried Sophie toward the edge of the room.

Grace brought ice wrapped in cloth for Sophie's cheek.

The mark was faint.

Sophie pressed the ice against it.

"Am I in trouble?"

Emily kissed her forehead.

"Yes."

Sophie looked shocked.

"For what?"

"You promised not to approach Vanessa."

"But I was right."

"You can be right and still break a promise."

Sophie considered that.

"How much trouble?"

"We'll discuss it later."

Sophie sighed.

Then Emily hugged her harder.

"But I'm proud you told the truth."

Across the ballroom, Alexander removed his tuxedo jacket and handed it to Vanessa so she could cover the torn gown.

The gesture surprised everyone.

Especially Vanessa.

"This doesn't mean I forgive you," he said quietly.

"I know."

"It means I'm not going to humiliate your body to punish what you did."

Vanessa wrapped the jacket around herself.

For the first time that evening, she looked less like a villain in a society scandal and more like a frightened woman who had destroyed her own life.

Cynthia showed no such humility.

She attempted to leave through a service exit.

Two hotel security officers blocked the door.

"You cannot detain me."

Emily approached.

"We're not detaining you."

"Then move."

"You're welcome to leave through the public lobby."

Cynthia looked toward the waiting reporters.

Her face tightened.

Emily continued.

"Restricted corridors are closed."

Cynthia glared at her.

"You think this makes you powerful?"

"No."

Emily looked toward Sophie.

"It makes my daughter safe."

Dr. Pierce had already disappeared.

That worried Emily.

She checked the cameras.

His car was gone.

But his black medical case remained backstage.

Inside were adhesive strips.

Compression garments.

Silicone padding.

Disposable medical labels.

Three USB drives.

And a portable ultrasound display unit.

Alexander's attorney took custody of the items with security witnesses present.

One USB contained prerecorded ultrasound loops.

Another contained blank Northbridge certification templates.

The third was encrypted.

Cynthia saw the drives.

For the first time, real fear crossed her face.

"What is that?"

Emily noticed.

"You tell me."

Cynthia said nothing.

Vanessa looked toward the drive.

Then toward Cynthia.

"What did you put on it?"

"Nothing."

"Cynthia."

"Nothing."

Vanessa moved closer.

"You told me the clinic files were destroyed."

Alexander heard her.

"What clinic files?"

Vanessa's face went pale.

Cynthia rushed toward her.

"Stop talking."

Emily stepped between them.

Vanessa stared at her sister.

"You said nobody kept copies."

Cynthia whispered, "Don't."

"What copies?"

Alexander's voice filled the room.

Vanessa looked at him.

"Pierce recorded everything."

"What everything?"

"The fake appointments."

Cynthia closed her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"He filmed them in case he needed protection from us."

Emily looked at the encrypted drive.

Alexander's lawyer immediately requested a forensic image.

No one altered the original.

By midnight, investigators unlocked enough of the data to understand what frightened Cynthia.

Pierce had kept records.

Every payment.

Every forged certification.

Every staged appointment.

Every conversation with Cynthia.

And one audio recording made seven months earlier contained a sentence that changed the direction of the entire case.

Cynthia's voice.

Vanessa doesn't need to know where the foundation money goes. Keep her focused on Alexander.

Vanessa listened beside her attorney.

She covered her face.

For months, she had believed she and Cynthia were partners.

In reality, Cynthia had turned her sister's desperate lie into a private criminal business.

That did not make Vanessa innocent.

But it explained why the fraud had become so large.

Alexander left the ballroom at 2:13 in the morning.

The guests were long gone.

Flowers lay abandoned on tables.

Broken glass had been cleaned.

The fake pregnancy cushion had been sealed inside an evidence bag.

He stopped near Emily.

Sophie was asleep across two chairs with Emily's coat covering her.

Alexander looked at the child.

"She destroyed my marriage with a flower pin."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Your marriage was already destroyed."

May you like

Emily glanced at the evidence bag.

"She just made it visible."
