Chapter 7 - Keith’s Last Performance
The federal investigation remained secret while agents traced Keith’s accounts.
They found forged guardianship documents, payments to corrupt intermediaries, destroyed records, and transfers from Sabrina’s inheritance. They also discovered that Keith’s financial empire was beginning to collapse.
Several hotels were heavily mortgaged. Investors had started asking questions. The graduation celebration at the Grand Whitmore was not merely a family event.
Keith planned to use the evening to announce a major investment partnership.
He needed Blanca’s reputation and Austin’s academic success to reassure investors.
Blanca considered canceling the celebration.
Daniel advised against it.
“Keith believes he still controls the story. Let him perform.”
The investigators wanted a final recording linking Keith directly to Sabrina’s confinement and the financial crimes. Austin’s first recording contained disturbing statements, but Keith had avoided specific details.
Austin proposed provoking him publicly.
Blanca refused at first.
“You do not owe anyone another confrontation.”
“I know.”
“You have already done enough.”
“This is not only about evidence. He has spent my entire life deciding what everyone is allowed to know.”
“Public humiliation will not heal what he did.”
“No. But public truth might stop him from rewriting it.”
Blanca understood.
Keith had survived every scandal by controlling appearances. He relied on the politeness of others. He assumed victims would remain silent to protect themselves from embarrassment.
The ballroom would become the one place where silence could no longer protect him.
Austin told Keith he had discovered Sabrina’s identity and resented Blanca for keeping him from his biological family.
Keith believed him.
He suggested that Austin publicly thank him during the graduation speech.
“You are a Mercer,” Keith said. “People should know which side you have chosen.”
Austin asked whether Keith was willing to tell the truth about the adoption.
Keith laughed.
“I’ll tell them enough.”
On the morning of the celebration, Keith presented Austin with a restored gold watch.
He did not know Austin had given him a replica.
The original watch, fitted with the recording device, was already on Austin’s wrist.
“This belonged to Sabrina’s father,” Keith said. “It should have been mine years ago.”
“Why?”
“Because I paid for everything he owned after he died.”
“You mean you bought his shop?”
“I mean debts make ownership flexible.”
Austin let the silence linger.
Keith fastened the watch around his wrist.
“Tonight, you become part of the real world. No more university theories. No more childish morality.”
“What does the real world require?”
Keith smiled.
“Knowing when truth is useful and when it should remain buried.”
Across town, investigators listened through the transmitter.
Austin looked at his father.
“Is that what you did with Sabrina?”
Keith’s smile vanished.
“She should have stayed quiet.”
“Instead, you kept her hidden for eighteen years.”
“I kept all of us safe.”
“You told her I was dead.”
“It was necessary.”
“You told Blanca my birth mother was dead.”
“That was necessary too.”
“And the money?”
Keith lowered his voice.
“Everything I did built the life you enjoyed. Never apologize for winning.”
