Chapter 5 - The Patient Called Sarah Bell

The recording gave federal investigators enough reason to examine Bluebird Residential Services.

The facility was a private neurological care center hidden behind high walls and pine trees. Its patients lived under strict privacy agreements. Most had legal guardians who controlled access to them.

Sarah Bell had been admitted eighteen years earlier.

Her legal guardian was a company attorney who had once worked for Keith.

The investigators obtained a court order.

Blanca and Austin waited in Daniel’s office while agents entered the facility. Hours passed without news.

Austin paced near the window.

“What if she isn’t there?”

“Then we keep searching,” Blanca said.

“What if she is there and she doesn’t want to see me?”

“Then we respect her choice.”

“What if she thinks I forgot her?”

“You were a newborn. None of this was your fault.”

Austin stopped pacing.

“Do you blame yourself?”

Blanca looked down at her hands.

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“For trusting him. For accepting documents I should have examined. For not seeing what was happening.”

“You loved a baby who needed you.”

“I also helped Keith hide what he did, even if I didn’t know.”

Austin sat beside her.

“You were deceived too.”

Blanca had spent years teaching soldiers that responsibility and guilt were not the same thing. Yet she struggled to offer herself the same understanding.

Near midnight, Daniel entered.

“They found her.”

Austin stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

Daniel continued carefully.

“Sarah Bell is Sabrina Vale.”

Blanca covered her mouth.

“She is alive?” Austin asked.

“Yes.”

“Can I see her?”

“Not yet. Her medical condition is complicated, and the court must appoint an independent advocate. But she is conscious. She can communicate.”

“What happened to her?”

Investigators had discovered fragments of the truth.

Eighteen years earlier, Sabrina left Austin with a trusted nurse while she drove to Santa Fe to meet her father and federal authorities. Her car went off an isolated road after someone had tampered with it.

She survived but suffered serious memory and communication difficulties.

Keith located her before Samuel did.

Using a false identity and forged guardianship papers, he moved her into private care. He told the staff she had no family. He paid the facility through shell companies and restricted all visitors.

As Sabrina slowly regained memories, she tried to contact Samuel. Her letters were intercepted.

She eventually convinced a recently hired nurse to mail the package to Austin. She had remembered his birthday, Keith’s company, and the storage-unit key.

The nurse had taken a risk to help her.

Austin turned away and pressed both hands against the window.

Keith had stolen eighteen years from Sabrina.

He had stolen the truth from Blanca.

He had stolen Austin’s right to know where he came from.

“Is she safe now?” Blanca asked.

Daniel nodded.

“Keith no longer controls her care. Federal protection has been arranged.”

Austin looked back at him.

“Does she remember me?”

May you like

Daniel’s expression softened.

“The first thing she asked was whether her baby had grown up safe.”
