Chapter 4 - The First Recording

Blanca contacted an investigator she trusted from her years in military logistics.

Daniel Cho had once worked with federal fraud units before becoming an inspector for government contractors. He was patient, careful, and almost impossible to intimidate.

He studied Samuel’s ledgers and the adoption papers.

“These documents are sophisticated,” Daniel said. “But they are not genuine.”

He pointed to a state seal.

“This design was introduced two years after Austin’s supposed adoption.”

Austin sat across from him.

“So Keith forged everything.”

“Someone did. We need proof connecting your father to the forgeries and to Sabrina’s disappearance.”

Blanca asked whether Daniel could open an official investigation.

He explained that authorities would require evidence of a current crime or a stronger connection to the old one. The financial notes in Samuel’s ledger could help.

Sabrina had written account numbers beside several entries.

Daniel discovered that the accounts belonged to shell companies connected to Keith’s hotel empire. Millions of dollars had moved through them over eighteen years.

Some of the money came from disaster-recovery grants and business loans intended for hotel employees after storms and wildfires.

Keith had stolen from public funds, his workers, and investors.

Yet the most disturbing account was under the name Bluebird Residential Services.

It paid a private medical facility outside Albuquerque.

The listed patient was Sarah Bell.

There were no public records showing who Sarah Bell was.

Daniel warned them not to confront Keith.

“If he realizes what you know, he may destroy evidence or move the patient.”

Austin looked at the gold watch from the storage unit.

“Can we make him confess?”

“People like Keith rarely confess directly.”

“He likes to brag when he thinks he has won.”

Blanca understood immediately.

Keith had always treated secrets as weapons. If he believed Austin admired his cleverness, he might reveal more than he intended.

Daniel arranged for a recording device to be placed inside the watch.

The plan was simple.

Austin would meet Keith alone and pretend he had discovered only the affair. He would act angry at Blanca and grateful to his father for telling him the truth.

Blanca hated the idea.

“He has manipulated you your entire life.”

“That is why he’ll believe I can be manipulated again,” Austin replied.

They chose a private dining room at one of Keith’s hotels.

Austin wore the gold watch beneath his sleeve.

At first, Keith denied knowing Sabrina.

Austin placed the photograph on the table.

Keith’s expression changed.

“I’m not here to judge you,” Austin said. “I’m here because I’m tired of Blanca pretending everything is perfect.”

Calling Blanca by her first name instead of Mom made him feel sick, but it worked.

Keith leaned back.

“She always needed to be the hero.”

“Was Sabrina my mother?”

Keith remained silent.

Austin lowered his voice.

“I already know. I just want to hear it from you.”

Keith smiled faintly.

“Yes. Sabrina was your mother.”

“Did she die?”

“Eventually.”

Austin forced himself not to react.

“What does that mean?”

“It means she made poor choices. She threatened powerful people and suffered the consequences.”

“Did you hurt her?”

“I protected you from her instability.”

“By giving me to Blanca?”

“Blanca wanted a child. You needed a respectable mother. I solved two problems.”

Austin’s hand tightened beneath the table.

“Where is Sabrina?”

Keith looked toward the closed door.

“Some questions are dangerous, son.”

Then he tapped Austin’s watch.

“That belonged to her father. He asked too many questions too.”
