THE NIGHT THE FREEZER OPENED / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - daniel signed the papers)

Mara's second recording began with breathing.

Fast.

Panicked.

Then her voice.

"If you're hearing this, I made a mistake."

Daniel sat beside Ava in the police evidence room.

Lily was with Hannah.

The memory card had been copied and authenticated.

Mara continued.

"I thought my mother wanted control of the trust. I thought this was about money. It isn't. Or not only money."

Static crackled.

"I found files on eighteen people."

Daniel looked at Ava.

"Eighteen?"

The recording continued.

"All declared unstable. Dead. Missing. Institutionalized. All connected to Vale Industries."

Mara inhaled.

"Ellen was number six."

Room Six.

"I found her."

Daniel whispered.

"She really was alive."

Mara's voice shook.

"She barely recognized me. Keene had been drugging her for years."

A chair scraped in the background of the recording.

Then Mara spoke more quietly.

"My mother knows I'm investigating."

Another pause.

"If anything happens, Thomas has copies of Daniel's signatures."

Daniel frowned.

Then Mara said the sentence that changed everything.

"The papers that put me in North House were signed by Daniel."

Daniel stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"No."

Ava remained seated.

"Listen."

"That's impossible."

Mara continued.

"I know Daniel didn't sign them. But nobody else will know."

Daniel stopped.

Ava looked at him.

The recording continued.

"Thomas copied Daniel's signature from our mortgage records."

Daniel sat again.

Mara explained that Lydia planned to portray Daniel as an abusive husband who had requested Mara's psychiatric confinement.

If Mara vanished, Daniel would become the obvious suspect.

If Daniel objected, Lydia would use the forged mental health records against him.

If both parents were removed, Lily and the Vale shares would belong to Lydia's control.

It was elegant.

Cruel.

Almost impossible to prove.

Then Mara said something strange.

"But Lydia didn't create North House."

Daniel looked at Ava.

"Who did?"

Mara answered as though she had heard him.

"She inherited it."

The recording became quieter.

"Her father was involved. Maybe his father too. I don't know how long this has existed."

Ava wrote rapidly.

Mara continued.

"Keene calls it preservation."

Preservation.

People inconvenient to powerful families could be erased without being killed.

Declared unstable.

Moved.

Drugged.

Renamed.

Forgotten.

The recording ended with Mara crying.

"If Lily remembers the red door, they will know she saw everything."

Then one final sentence.

"Daniel, if you find me, don't trust the first story I tell you."

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at the speaker.

"What does that mean?"

Ava shook her head.

"I don't know."

Daniel replayed the sentence.

Don't trust the first story I tell you.

Was Mara warning him that she might be coerced?

Drugged?

Conditioned?

Or lying?

Ava's phone rang.

She answered.

Daniel watched her face change.

"Where?"

She stood.

"We're coming."

"What?"

Ava grabbed her jacket.

"North House."

Daniel's heart stopped.

"What happened?"

"The team entered twenty minutes ago."

"And?"

"Someone was there."

"Mara?"

Ava hesitated.

"They found a woman."

Daniel followed her toward the door.

"Is it Mara?"

"We don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

Ava looked back.

"The woman says her name is Mara Reed."

Daniel could barely breathe.

"But?"

May you like

Ava's expression told him the rest before she spoke.

"But she says Daniel Reed is the man who put her there."
