THE NIGHT THE FREEZER OPENED / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - why mara chose daniel)

Mara refused to discuss Lydia's words until they returned home.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

Daniel stood in the kitchen.

Mara sat at the table.

For the first time since her rescue, there was distance between them.

"What did she mean?"

Mara looked down.

"Daniel."

"Why did you choose me?"

"Because I loved you."

"That's not what she meant."

Mara closed her eyes.

"No."

Daniel waited.

Mara finally spoke.

"I knew who your father was."

Daniel felt something inside him drop.

"When?"

"Before we met."

He stared at her.

Mara continued.

"When Ellen started investigating my family, she found Samuel Reed's name."

"My father."

"Yes."

"Alive?"

"I didn't know."

Daniel stepped back.

"So our meeting wasn't accidental."

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

"Not completely."

Daniel remembered meeting Mara at a charity medical conference.

She spilled coffee on his jacket.

They laughed.

She bought him another shirt at the hotel gift shop.

Dinner followed.

Then months.

Then years.

Marriage.

Lily.

Had all of it started as an investigation?

"You found me."

"Yes."

"Because of my father."

"At first."

Daniel turned away.

Mara stood.

"I was trying to understand what happened to Ellen. Your father was connected to the old network. I thought you might know something."

"But I didn't."

"No."

"And you stayed."

"Because I fell in love with you."

Daniel wanted to believe her.

Part of him did.

Part of him remembered the recording.

Don't trust the first story I tell you.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"That you'd look at me exactly like you're looking at me now."

Daniel said nothing.

Mara wiped her eyes.

"After Lily was born, I stopped investigating."

"But you started again."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Mara looked toward the ceiling.

Toward Lily's room.

"Because my mother started asking about Lily's trust."

Daniel understood.

"Lydia wanted custody."

"She wanted everything."

Mara found the forged psychiatric reports.

Then she discovered Daniel's old medical file.

That was when she learned someone had tried to institutionalize him years earlier.

She realized their families had been connected long before their marriage.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

"The night I disappeared."

Daniel closed his eyes.

All the anger inside him suddenly had nowhere to go.

Mara stepped closer.

"I know what I did was wrong."

"You built our marriage on a secret."

"Part of it."

"How am I supposed to know which part?"

Mara whispered.

"You can't."

That answer hurt more because it was truthful.

Daniel went upstairs.

Lily was sleeping with Mara's silver bird pendant beside her pillow.

He sat beside the bed.

After several minutes Mara entered.

Neither spoke.

Then Lily opened her eyes.

"Are you fighting?"

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

Mara sat on the opposite side.

"We're talking."

Lily looked between them.

"Mommy came back. That means we have to stay together."

Mara smiled sadly.

Daniel touched Lily's hair.

"Families can be together even when they're angry."

Lily thought about that.

Then she took Daniel's hand.

And Mara's.

She put them together.

Daniel did not pull away.

Neither did Mara.

The following week Lydia formally entered a plea of not guilty.

The evidence against her was overwhelming.

Mara testified before a grand jury.

Ellen Price testified through video.

Thomas provided financial records.

Dozens of victims were identified.

Some alive.

Some dead.

Some still missing.

Lydia's power collapsed.

Vale Industries removed her from every position.

Her accounts were frozen.

Her attorneys resigned one after another.

For Daniel, the most important moment came quietly.

Lily returned to school.

She wore shoes.

She carried her backpack.

She laughed with another little girl at the entrance.

Daniel watched from the car.

Mara sat beside him.

"She looks normal."

Daniel nodded.

"She deserves normal."

Mara looked at him.

"So do you."

Daniel did not answer.

But when Mara reached for his hand, he let her hold it.

The nightmare had damaged their family.

May you like

It had not destroyed it.

Not yet.
