Chapter 14 - THE MAN IN THE FIRE)

Elena had seen a coffin.
Closed.
Michael’s remains had been identified through dental records and a wedding ring recovered from the vehicle.
She remembered signing forms while sedated by grief.
Arthur handled the funeral arrangements.
Victor handled the insurance company.
Elena had accepted what everyone told her because the alternative was impossible.
Now Detective Price reopened the identification file.
The problems appeared immediately.
The dental match had been performed by a private forensic consultant hired by Sterling legal counsel.
That consultant died two years later.
The original dental chart was missing.
DNA had never been tested.
The remains were badly burned.
Elena sat in a police conference room staring at the report.
“This doesn’t mean he survived.”
Price spoke carefully.
“No.”
“It means identification was weaker than it should have been.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stood by the window.
“Michael’s car went over a barrier.”
Price nodded.
“Witnesses reported fire.”
“Victor’s men arrived first.”
“Yes.”
“They heard a voice.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked at Evelyn through the interrogation-room glass.
“She knows.”
Price agreed.
Evelyn refused formal questioning without counsel.
But she requested five minutes alone with Elena.
Price objected.
Elena insisted.
They sat across from each other.
Evelyn studied her.
“You loved him.”
“Yes.”
“He talked about you.”
Elena’s heart stopped.
“When?”
Evelyn did not answer immediately.
“When did Michael talk about me?”
“You assume I mean before the crash.”
Elena stood.
Evelyn remained calm.
“Sit down.”
“Tell me where my husband is.”
“I don’t know.”
“Is he alive?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena slammed her palms onto the table.
“Stop playing with me.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You think this is a game because you entered it three days ago. I entered it when I was thirteen.”
Elena sat.
Evelyn continued.
“My grandfather created Cresswell. My mother discovered he used it to bribe judges, buy regulators and destroy rivals.”
“What happened to you?”
“I found records.”
“You were thirteen.”
“I was curious.”
“What did your grandfather do?”
“He told everyone I had behavioral problems.”
Elena understood.
“Like Arthur’s dementia.”
“Exactly.”
“I was sent to a private psychiatric institution in Switzerland.”
“For how long?”
“Seven years.”
Elena felt sick.
“Arthur knew?”
“My father tried to get me out.”
“Did he?”
“Eventually.”
“Then why erase you?”
“Because the condition of my release was that I disappear.”
“Whose condition?”
Evelyn smiled without humor.
“Cresswell was never one person.”
“Then who controls it?”
“Whoever has enough secrets.”
Elena leaned forward.
“Michael.”
Evelyn’s eyes softened.
“He found me eight years ago.”
Elena stopped.
Eight years.
Before Leo’s birth.
Before Michael’s death.
“He knew you were alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because I asked him not to.”
“He was your brother.”
“And he wanted to rescue me.”
“What happened?”
“He began investigating Cresswell.”
“So this started long before Lazarus.”
“Yes.”
“Lazarus gave him leverage.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Victor thought Michael was trying to expose corporate fraud. Michael was actually following money into Cresswell.”
Elena whispered:
“The night of the crash.”
Evelyn looked away.
“He was supposed to meet Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No.”
“Where did he go?”
“To Blackwater House first.”
Elena stared.
“Why?”
“To meet Arthur.”
“What happened?”
“I wasn’t there.”
“You know something.”
“Arthur gave Michael the second passport.”
Daniel Cross.
Elena’s heartbeat pounded.
“Why?”
“Because Michael believed Cresswell was going to kill him.”
“So he planned to disappear?”
“For forty-eight hours. Long enough to release the files safely.”
“What went wrong?”
“Victor’s men followed him.”
“And the crash?”
“Michael called me afterward.”
The room tilted.
Elena gripped the table.
“After the crash?”
Evelyn nodded.
“He was alive.”
Elena could not speak.
Evelyn continued.
“He said someone pulled him from the car.”
“Who?”
“He didn’t know.”
“Then what?”
“The call ended.”
“When?”
“Approximately forty minutes after the crash.”
Elena felt tears running down her face.
Michael had survived.
At least forty minutes.
“Did you hear from him again?”
Evelyn hesitated.
That hesitation said everything.
“When?”
“Six days later.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“What did he say?”
“Only four words.”
“What words?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Do not look for me.”
The same words Arthur had written.
Elena stood slowly.
“Where is Arthur?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You still think finding Arthur solves this.”
“He knows.”
“He knows what he did.”
“What did he do?”
Evelyn looked toward the observation glass.
“Your husband survived the crash.”
Elena waited.
“And Arthur made sure the world believed he didn’t.”
Elena’s voice became a whisper.
“Why?”
May you like
Evelyn’s answer was almost gentle.
“Because Michael asked him to.”
