Chapter 13 - WHAT BEATRICE LEFT BEHIND)

Blackwater House stood on an island two miles from the coast.
Arthur Sterling had owned it through a shell corporation since 1992.
Elena found the deed inside Michael’s files.
The state police obtained a warrant.
Weather delayed their crossing until the following afternoon.
Elena went with Price and Adrian.
Leo remained under protection.
Victor stayed in custody.
Blackwater House was not the mansion Elena expected.
It was a severe stone building overlooking the sea.
Windows shuttered.
Garden dead.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Beatrice Sterling had spent the final year of her life there.
Arthur had hidden that from his sons.
Or at least from Michael.
Adrian found the first clue in the study.
A photograph album.
Beatrice.
Arthur.
Young Michael.
Young Victor.
And another child.
A girl.
Perhaps twelve years old.
Elena turned the page.
More photographs.
The same girl.
Birthday dinner.
Sailing.
Christmas.
Then she vanished from the album.
“Who is she?” Price asked.
Adrian shook his head.
Elena searched Michael’s digital files.
Face recognition found one match.
An old scanned family document.
Name:
Evelyn Beatrice Sterling.
Born sixteen months before Victor.
There was no death certificate.
No school record after age thirteen.
No mention of her in the official Sterling family history.
Elena felt cold.
“Arthur had a daughter.”
Price said:
“Apparently.”
“Why erase her?”
They searched upstairs.
The largest bedroom had belonged to Beatrice.
Inside the closet, Elena found marks carved into the wood.
M.
V.
E.
Three initials.
Michael.
Victor.
Evelyn.
Underneath:
WE REMEMBER.
Adrian whispered:
“Seventeen remembers what the family forgets.”
Elena looked at him.
“Maybe Room 17 wasn’t only about documents.”
Price found medical records.
Beatrice had cancer.
But her final records contained another diagnosis.
Paranoia.
Delusions.
Memory disturbances.
The physician was Dr. Samuel Graves.
Father of the Dr. Graves who had medicated Arthur.
Elena stared at the name.
“Same family.”
Adrian nodded.
“Same method.”
Declare someone confused.
Control them.
Discredit them.
A locked desk drawer contained cassette tapes.
One was labeled:
FOR MICHAEL.
Adrian found an old player.
Beatrice’s voice filled the room.
Weak.
Clear.
“Michael, if your father gives you this, then he finally decided fear was more dangerous than truth.”
Elena sat.
Beatrice continued.
“You had a sister.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Evelyn.”
“She did not die.”
The tape crackled.
“She was taken from us after your grandfather discovered what she had learned about Cresswell.”
Elena’s heartbeat accelerated.
“Your father tried to find her. I tried longer.”
Beatrice coughed.
“If Evelyn is alive, she is the legal custodian of Cresswell.”
Price paused the tape.
“Legal custodian.”
The words from the warehouse wall.
The last legitimate custodian.
She resumed.
“If she is dead, control passes according to the original Cresswell charter.”
Another cough.
“To the eldest direct descendant of my bloodline who has not served as an officer of Sterling Industries.”
Everyone stopped.
Victor had been CEO.
Michael had been an officer.
Arthur had been chairman.
Leo had never served in the company.
Elena whispered:
“Leo.”
Adrian nodded.
“That’s why they want him.”
The tape continued.
“Michael, never allow Cresswell to reach your children.”
Beatrice’s voice trembled.
“It was created to hide assets. It became a machine for controlling people.”
Elena felt sick.
“Destroy it.”
The tape ended.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then footsteps sounded downstairs.
Police officers shouted.
A door slammed.
Adrian pulled Elena back.
Price drew her weapon.
“Stay here.”
A figure ran across the courtyard.
Female.
Dark coat.
Gray hair.
An officer tackled her near the gate.
Elena and Adrian went downstairs.
The woman was perhaps sixty.
Elegant despite the mud on her clothes.
She looked directly at Elena.
Then at the photograph Elena was holding.
Her expression changed.
“You found Mother’s tapes.”
Elena stopped.
Price asked:
“Who are you?”
The woman laughed softly.
“Arthur never told you?”
Elena stared.
“Evelyn?”
The woman’s eyes moved to her.
“So you’re Michael’s wife.”
“You’re his sister?”
The woman’s smile vanished.
“I was.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Is Arthur with you?”
Evelyn said nothing.
“Where is he?”
“He came voluntarily.”
“Where?”
“He wanted to correct his mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Evelyn looked toward the sea.
“Leaving me alive.”
Adrian stiffened.
Elena asked:
“What happened to you?”
Evelyn looked back.
“Ask Arthur.”
“I can’t find him.”
“That was the point.”
Price instructed officers to search Evelyn.
They found a phone.
Inside was one unsent text.
Recipient unknown.
THE BOY DOES NOT KNOW YET.
Elena grabbed the device.
“Know what?”
Evelyn looked at her.
A strange sadness entered her face.
“That his father discovered the wrong Sterling secret.”
“Michael discovered Cresswell.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Michael discovered what happened after the crash.”
Elena froze.
“What happened after?”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“You’ve spent three years asking how Michael died.”
May you like
She leaned closer.
“You should be asking why they never let you see his body.”
