Chapter 9 - North Haven)

North Haven did not appear in Whitmore Holdings records.

It did not appear in property databases under the Whitmore name.

Marcus eventually found it buried beneath four shell companies.

The final owner was a charitable trust established twenty two years earlier.

One trustee remained active.

Richard Whitmore.

Daniel drove to his uncle's apartment before dawn.

Richard opened the door wearing a robe.

When he saw Daniel, he sighed.

"You found North Haven."

Daniel pushed past him.

"You could have saved us a lot of time."

Richard closed the door.

"Your father made me promise."

"He's alive."

Richard said nothing.

Daniel held up the photograph.

"Six months ago."

Richard looked at it.

His face changed.

"You've seen him."

"No."

"Liar."

Richard walked toward the window.

"I haven't seen Thomas in eighteen years."

"Not twenty?"

Daniel caught the difference.

Richard closed his eyes.

"When did you see him?"

"Two years after he disappeared."

"Where?"

"North Haven."

Daniel stared.

"Why?"

"He contacted me."

"What did he want?"

"To know whether Charles had stopped watching you."

"And?"

"I told him yes."

"So Dad could have come home."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because Charles had stopped watching you because he believed Thomas was dead."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Did Dad want to come back?"

Richard looked at him.

"Every day."

Daniel felt anger and grief collide.

"Then why didn't you help him?"

"Because I watched him stand outside your school once."

Daniel froze.

"He came near me?"

"He watched you from across the street."

"When?"

"You were fourteen."

Daniel could barely speak.

"You let him?"

"I tried to stop him."

Richard's eyes filled.

"He cried in my car for an hour afterward."

Daniel turned away.

He hated Richard.

He pitied him.

He hated himself for pitying him.

"Tell me about North Haven."

Richard nodded.

"It was a safe location."

"For Dad?"

"For evidence."

"What evidence?"

"The complete archive."

Marcus had arrived behind Daniel and was standing near the door.

He said, "The master property list."

Richard looked at him.

"More than that."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

"Names."

"Whose?"

"Everyone."

Richard sat.

"Your father spent years building a record of the network. Not only Charles. Judges. Contractors. Officials. Financial intermediaries."

Daniel asked, "Where is it?"

Richard looked at him.

"I don't know."

"You were trustee."

"I controlled the property, not the archive."

"Who did?"

"Thomas."

"Then why is Charles still looking for it?"

"Because Thomas created an insurance mechanism."

Marcus frowned.

"What mechanism?"

Richard looked toward Daniel.

"If anything happened to Eleanor or you, copies would be released."

Daniel stared.

"Automatically?"

"No. Through people."

"Who?"

"I never knew all of them."

"Gabriel?"

"Probably."

Daniel sat across from his uncle.

"Did Grandfather help Dad disappear?"

"Yes."

"Was Grandfather corrupt?"

Richard's silence answered.

"How involved?"

"Enough to hate himself."

Daniel did not know what to feel.

Richard continued.

"Your grandfather helped Charles move money in the early years. He told himself it was harmless. Political donations. Business favors. Then people started getting hurt."

"So he helped Dad escape."

"It was his attempt to fix one thing before he died."

Daniel looked at the brass key.

"What does this open?"

Richard nodded toward it.

"North Haven."

Daniel frowned.

"A door?"

"A vault."

Marcus and Daniel exchanged a look.

"Where?"

Richard stood.

"I'll take you."

By afternoon, they reached Vermont.

North Haven was hidden beyond a narrow mountain road.

The building looked like an abandoned hunting lodge.

Snow had begun falling lightly despite the season turning.

Richard unlocked the outer gate.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Gabriel joined them there.

Eleanor had refused to come.

Daniel understood.

For her, North Haven was not simply a place.

It was the name associated with losing Thomas.

They searched.

The vault was below the lodge.

The brass key opened an iron door.

Beyond it stood rows of filing cabinets.

Daniel's heart raced.

Then Marcus opened the first drawer.

Empty.

Second.

Empty.

Every cabinet was empty.

Richard stared.

"No."

Gabriel crossed toward the rear wall.

A shelf had been moved.

Behind it were fresh scrape marks.

"Someone cleared this place recently."

Daniel looked at him.

"How recently?"

Gabriel touched the dust.

"Weeks."

Marcus found something on the floor.

A torn piece of red fabric.

Daniel recognized the shade immediately.

Vanessa's dress from the ballroom had been new.

But Vanessa owned dozens of red outfits.

Still, the color made his stomach turn.

Richard said, "She found it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"If Vanessa had the archive, Charles wouldn't need the merger anymore."

Marcus nodded.

"Daniel's right."

Gabriel looked around.

"Then maybe whoever removed it wasn't working for Blackwell."

Daniel walked deeper into the vault.

On the rear wall was an old photograph.

Thomas Whitmore.

Samuel Mercer.

Gabriel Cole.

Richard.

And a fifth man Daniel did not recognize.

The photograph had been taken outside North Haven.

Daniel pointed.

"Who is he?"

No one answered.

He looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel's face had gone pale.

"Who?"

Gabriel spoke reluctantly.

"Michael Hale."

"Who is Michael Hale?"

Richard whispered, "The man your father trusted more than any of us."

Daniel looked again at the photograph.

"Where is he?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"Missing."

"Since when?"

"Six months ago."

The same time Thomas's bank box was opened.

The same time Eleanor received the photograph.

Daniel took a picture of Michael Hale.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He stared at the name.

Richard said, "Don't answer."

Daniel did.

"Hello?"

Vanessa's voice was calm.

"I heard you went to Vermont."

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"How?"

She laughed softly.

"You still don't understand how many people in your life belong to us."

Daniel looked around the vault.

"What do you want?"

"The key."

"You already emptied the vault."

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, "What empty vault?"

Daniel realized she did not know.

Someone else had taken the archive.

Vanessa continued.

"Daniel, listen carefully. Whatever you think happened between us, this is bigger."

"You ordered my mother to kneel."

"I know."

"You hit her."

"I know."

"And now you want me to trust you?"

"No."

Her voice changed.

"I want you to survive long enough to hate me."

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa whispered, "My father did not erase your security footage."

"Who did?"

"I don't know."

"Who emptied North Haven?"

"I don't know."

"Then why call?"

"Because someone just broke into my father's private office."

Daniel waited.

"And?"

"They left one thing on his desk."

"What?"

Vanessa's voice became unsteady.

"A photograph of your father."

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

"Recent?"

"Taken yesterday."
