Chapter 11 - Room 317)

Room 317 belonged to the Whitmore Grand.
Daniel's oldest hotel.
The first property he had purchased with his own money at age twenty six.
He had renovated almost every room.
But Room 317 remained unusual.
It had been sealed during construction after workers discovered structural damage.
Daniel had always assumed it contained pipes and unused storage space.
Now he wondered whether that explanation had been manufactured.
He returned to New York before midnight.
Marcus met him at the hotel.
Security had already cleared the third floor.
Room 317 was behind an unmarked service door.
The lock was old.
Daniel inserted the brass key.
It turned.
Inside was not a hotel room.
It was an archive.
Boxes lined the walls.
Old photographs.
Accounting books.
Cassette tapes.
Hard drives.
Letters.
Daniel stood motionless.
His entire adult career had begun in this building.
His father had hidden evidence here before Daniel even owned it.
Or someone had placed it here later.
Marcus whispered, "This could be everything."
Gabriel opened one box.
Inside were property files containing handwritten codes.
"The map."
Daniel searched.
He found a folder marked BLACKWELL.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
"Don't open that."
Daniel turned.
Richard stood there.
He looked exhausted.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You used your credentials to access company records."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To find this room."
"You knew about it?"
"No. Your father left a clue inside an old property schedule."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Charles was watching your access logs."
Marcus stared.
"So you deliberately used your own credentials to draw attention."
Richard nodded.
Daniel understood.
"You wanted Charles to follow you."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Richard stepped inside.
"Because Gabriel told me you had found Room 317."
Daniel turned toward Gabriel.
"You spoke to him?"
Gabriel nodded.
"On the drive."
Daniel was angry, but before he could respond, alarms sounded.
Security.
Someone had entered the hotel through the underground garage.
Daniel checked the camera feed.
Charles Blackwell.
Three men with him.
Vanessa was not lying.
Charles had come personally.
Richard closed the archive door.
"He thinks the master ledger is here."
"Is it?"
Richard looked toward the Blackwell folder.
"I don't know."
Daniel opened it.
Inside were photographs of Charles from decades earlier.
Meetings.
Properties.
Politicians.
Bankers.
Then a photograph stopped Daniel.
Charles standing beside Thomas Whitmore.
And beside Eleanor.
Daniel stared.
The date was one year before Thomas disappeared.
His mother had never mentioned knowing Charles that well.
He turned the photograph over.
Three words were written on the back.
The first agreement.
Marcus opened another document.
A partnership contract.
Thomas Whitmore.
Charles Blackwell.
Eleanor Whitmore.
Daniel stared at his mother's signature.
"My mother was a partner?"
Richard looked shocked.
"I never knew."
Footsteps approached outside.
Gabriel whispered, "Later."
Daniel grabbed the folder.
They exited through a rear service passage.
But Charles's men had split up.
One appeared at the corridor's end.
Daniel and Marcus turned.
Another blocked the opposite side.
Charles walked slowly between them.
"This has gone far enough."
Daniel held the folder behind him.
"You seem nervous."
Charles smiled.
"Give me the documents."
"No."
"You don't know what they mean."
"Then explain why my mother's signature is on them."
For the first time, Charles's expression changed.
"You found that."
"Apparently."
Richard stepped forward.
"Leave, Charles."
Charles looked at him.
"You should have stayed loyal."
Richard laughed sadly.
"I was loyal for twenty years. Look what it made me."
Charles's eyes returned to Daniel.
"Your mother has lied to you more than I ever did."
Daniel answered, "That doesn't make you trustworthy."
"No."
Charles nodded.
"But it should make you curious."
Daniel felt the manipulation.
He refused to respond.
Charles continued anyway.
"Ask Eleanor who created the first property codes."
Daniel said nothing.
"Ask her who convinced Thomas to keep records."
Silence.
"Ask her why your father disappeared only after she signed that agreement."
Daniel's grip tightened around the folder.
"You threatened a child."
Charles looked almost offended.
"I never threatened you."
"Samuel Mercer showed my mother a photograph of me."
"Samuel was trying to protect you."
Daniel remembered Gabriel saying the same thing.
Charles continued.
"Your mother told herself I was the monster because it made her choices easier."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What choices?"
Before Charles answered, Vanessa appeared behind him.
Her face was pale.
"Don't."
Charles turned.
"What are you doing here?"
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
"He's trying to make you turn on Eleanor."
Charles's expression hardened.
"Go home."
"No."
"Vanessa."
"No."
Daniel watched father and daughter.
Vanessa walked toward Daniel.
"My father destroyed your family."
Charles said, "Be careful."
She ignored him.
"But your mother helped build the thing Thomas later tried to destroy."
Daniel stared.
"Explain."
Vanessa swallowed.
"Before you were born, Eleanor worked for Charles and Thomas."
Daniel's world shifted again.
"Doing what?"
"Accounting."
Charles closed his eyes.
Vanessa continued.
"She designed the original property coding system."
Daniel looked at the papers.
The map his father had used to hide evidence had originally been created by his mother.
"Why?"
Vanessa's voice was quiet.
"Because at first it wasn't used to hide crimes."
Charles said, "Enough."
Vanessa turned on him.
"You had twenty years to tell the truth."
Charles's face became hard.
"I kept this family alive."
"By destroying theirs."
Daniel stepped between them.
"What changed?"
Vanessa looked at him.
"Your mother discovered my father was using her system for secret transactions."
Daniel whispered, "So she told Dad."
"Yes."
Charles said, "That is not the whole story."
Daniel faced him.
"Then tell me."
Charles looked at the Blackwell folder.
Then at Daniel.
"The whole story is inside North Haven."
"It's empty."
Charles froze.
"What?"
"The archive is gone."
Charles stared at him.
For the first time Daniel saw genuine fear.
"You didn't take it?"
"No."
Charles turned toward Richard.
Richard shook his head.
Charles whispered, "Then we're all in trouble."
Marcus asked, "Why?"
Charles looked toward the sealed door of Room 317.
"Because only two people knew how to remove the North Haven archive without triggering the release mechanism."
Daniel waited.
"Who?"
Charles answered.
"Thomas Whitmore."
"And?"
May you like
Charles looked at the photograph containing Eleanor's signature.
"Your mother."
