Chapter 14 - The Person We Never Suspected
Rebecca refused to say the name.
Not immediately.
She demanded they leave the house.
Everyone moved outside.
The sun had begun to rise.
Rebecca finally spoke.
“The person behind this isn't Richard.”
Richard stared at her.
“Then who?”
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“Emily.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Not because she did anything.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Explain.”
Rebecca took a breath.
“She was used.”
Emily looked confused.
“By whom?”
Rebecca looked at Richard.
“James.”
Richard shook his head.
“James is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
Rebecca pulled a folder from her bag.
Inside were records of a trust created years ago.
The beneficiary was Emily.
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“Because James believed Richard would eventually destroy everything.”
Richard looked furious.
“That isn't true.”
Rebecca ignored him.
“Emily was supposed to inherit the trust when she turned twenty-one.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“I never knew.”
“Neither did I,” Daniel said.
Rebecca continued.
“But someone activated the trust early.”
Michael looked at the documents.
“That's impossible.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Not if someone has the master authorization.”
Michael went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“You know who has it.”
Michael didn't answer.
Rebecca did.
“Richard.”
Silence.
Daniel looked at his father.
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Rebecca stepped closer.
“You signed it years ago.”
“I didn't know what it was.”
“You signed.”
Richard looked broken.
“I thought it was insurance.”
Rebecca's voice softened.
“You always thought you were protecting us.”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Then why did you come to me?”
Richard looked at his son.
“Because I realized too late that they had chosen you.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Richard looked toward the road.
A black SUV was approaching.
Then another.
Rebecca whispered:
“They found us.”
Michael opened the car door.
“Everyone inside.”
Daniel grabbed Emily's hand.
Richard stood frozen.
Daniel pulled him.
“Dad, move.”
Richard looked at his son.
For the first time, Daniel saw genuine fear in his father's eyes.
